College Prowler Take
Prevalent drug use at Goucher is limited to tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana. Spotting cigarette or alcohol use is as easy as looking out your window or down the hall. You won’t go a weekend without seeing at least 20 people drinking alcohol. Pot use is much less visible. Most students are good at hiding it from security, but residents can often smell it wafting through the halls late at night or on the weekends. Pot is easy to obtain through several on- and off-campus suppliers. Many students rely on alcohol and pot for their weekend entertainment, so use is very prevalent at on-campus parties. While many students participate in this recreation, you don’t have to smoke or drink to fit in—students who do partake are cool about not pressuring others to join in. Drug use in Towson and Baltimore is quite prevalent. Harder drugs such as cocaine, LSD, and mushrooms are less popular among Goucher students, but they do exist. These drugs are available through a few students on campus who know off-campus suppliers. Some believe cocaine use among Goucher students is increasing, but if that is true, it is well hidden. It is entirely possible to go through four years at Goucher and never encounter the harder drug scene.

Sometimes it's noticeable, but it really depends where you hang out. Alcohol is the more prevalent drug of choice, and its presence on campus is quite clear. We do offer substance-free housing, which a lot of people take advantage of and really appreciate. In terms of hardcore drugs, they are here and I know where they usually are, but it seems as though the drug scene has toned down a lot since I entered as a freshman four years ago.

The biggest drug use I have seen on campus is drinking and smoking cigarettes. I know that other types of drugs can be found on campus, but they are not prevalent nor obvious. I would say that a lot of the students on campus drink, and a proportion of students on campus smoke.

For a liberal arts campus, Goucher is not as drug-infested as most. The drug scene is relatively quiet—it's there but not obnoxious.

Pot is a pretty big presence on campus, but there isn't a lot of pressure to do it. However, it's not rare to walk into a dorm hallway and smell it.
