Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life in general is often associated with huge keg parties and campus-wide competitions among each sorority and fraternity. Goucher doesn't have any Greek like, and many students say part of the reason they came here is to avoid this type of scene, while others wish there was a Greek life system on campus to liven things up. If you’re craving a fraternity party, head to Towson University or Johns Hopkins. The closest thing Goucher has to Greek life is the athletic teams. The men’s soccer and lacrosse teams share the most evident bonds on campus, and like stereotypical fraternities, the teams also throw the biggest parties and sometimes make new players go through an unofficial “hazing” process.

While sororities and fraternities can provide students with a guaranteed social circle, students at Goucher have no problem making friends on their own. From social circles created through on-campus clubs, majors, and classes, there are plenty of ways to bond with other students. The largest student network, however, is in the dorms. If you crave the excitement and rowdiness of Greek life, head elsewhere. If you prefer a more low-key atmosphere and bonding in a non-Greek setting, then Goucher is the better choice.

Nonexistent

We don't have a Greek life, something that was set in stone for the school at the beginning of time. I personally think that sororities and fraternities would be good here to bring a bit more normalcy to the campus and add some more philanthropy, something that Goucher likes to push.

No Greek Life

Although you can go to Hopkins or Towson, it is pretty easy to get in if you are a good looking girl or a guy surrounded by girls

Did You Know?

Much mystery surrounds the prohibition of Greek life on campus. The only reference to the rule lies deep within the Faculty Handbook under the section “Extracurricular Activities.” It states, “There shall be no social sororities or fraternities at Goucher College,” but offers no explanation. Rumor has it that a wealthy contributor to Goucher threatened that he would discontinue his monetary contributions if Goucher allowed Greek life on campus. Associate Dean of Students Emily Perl says that this is definitely not the case, but she is also unsure why Greek life is prohibited. She added that if a large majority of students came forward and wanted to start Greek life on campus, she would be happy to assist them.

Pi Sigma Phi
This off-campus sorority recruits students from Goucher College, Towson University, and Johns Hopkins University. Pi Sigma Phi is a social- and community-service-based sorority with the majority of its donations going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The sorority hosts events at all three colleges, volunteers in the Baltimore community, and promotes sisterhood between its members.
