Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The male-to-female ratio definitely works to the guys’ advantage. Only underclassmen girls fight over the available guys, but they eventually realize most of them are not worth fighting for and throw in the towel on on-campus dating. There are more casual hookups and short romances on campus than serious steady relationships. Jocks, hippies, airheads, preps, geeks, goths, and punks are all well represented at Goucher. However, there are plenty of students that don’t fit into these stereotypes, and these individualists tend to get the most guys or girls. As far as physical beauty goes, Goucher is lacking in male and female hotties, and the ones who are attractive are either taken or extremely egotistical. However, the majority of students on campus are intelligent, humorous, and have great personalities. There is also a large LGBT scene—you’ll never see students on campus do a double take when they see two girls or guys holding hands.

Thankfully, Goucher does not preach abstinence and trusts that students have had enough sex education. A range of contraceptives are available at Health Services, and there are no restrictions about having members of the opposite sex stay the night in your dorm.

70 / 30 Girls to Guys Ratio

There is a 70 / 30 ratio of girls to guys on campus. A lot of guys take advantage of this, which is really not cool. Especially on such a small campus. Most Goucher students are quirky and eccentric. Don't expect to find frat bros or sorority girls !

...Mainly Girls

There's a lot of hipsters. I mean big-glasses, skinny-jeans wearing, ironic-beard sprouting hipsters. I would be lying if I didn't throw that out there right away, but to be fair you can't really expect any different at an East-coast liberal arts school. Girls outnumber the guys two-to-one, and there's a thriving gay population. So, ladies, if you want a date, you might want to look elsewhere. In the men's defense, most of them aren't complete asshats. Not even the lax bros, really, so, there's that.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

Goucher college is not a big state school. If you want to be involved in the social scene you have to leave your room and search for it. Otherwise , student interaction outside of one’s social circle is usually limited to class and extracurricular activities. On weekends, students like to go to the bars in Towson, clubs in Baltimore, or just to a movie down the street or dinner with friends. There are also the options of checking out on-campus and off-campus parties, however on-campus parties are often limited to a small group of students hanging out and drinking in a dorm room. Occasionally, parties will spread into the hall and neighboring rooms, but that just increases the likelihood of Public Safety busting it.

Hookups or Relationships?

Goucher is a small school, so any hookups or relationships typically become public knowledge rather quickly. By the end of four years, it becomes nearly impossible to find someone who hasn’t been involved with someone you will know, inspiring many upperclassmen to find and meet partners off campus and at nearby schools.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

A great way to meet people outside of your classes and social circle is to wander through the dorms on a Friday or Saturday night. Most students have their doors propped open to chat with people that walk by and to keep an ear out for nearby parties. When the weather is warm, the best place to meet people is on the residential quad. With girls in bikinis and guys with their shirts off, it’s obvious what many people are really there for (because it’s not like there’s a pool on the quad). The dining halls are also a great way to scope out hotties—everyone has to eat, so this is the best way to find the reclusive ones. On-campus events are not always well attended, so attending them is not necessarily the best way to meet people. However, if you find on-campus activities and clubs a blast, you will meet other students who feel the same way at these events.

Dress Code

During the day, most students dress casual with jeans and T-shirts. While plenty of students look like they just stepped out of a fashion magazine, others tend to look like they just rolled out of the bed.
