Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Towson is a middle-class town with a population of about 50,000. Each section of town has a different atmosphere. Between Goucher and Towson University lies the “college atmosphere,” where stores, restaurants, and bars line the streets. To the east of Goucher lies the “family atmosphere,” where there are neighborhoods full of families with young children and a few shopping centers. Both areas are perfectly safe during the day, but a few crazies usually come out after the sun goes down.

All the college student essentials are within walking distance: a four-story mall, three grocery stores, Target, Wal-Mart, fast food joints, restaurants, a movie theater, a concert venue, bars, bookstores, thrift shops, and a record store. While most students prefer to drive, it’s nice to know that everything you need is only a short walk away. When students venture into Baltimore City or Washington DC, it’s usually out of boredom rather than necessity. Besides shopping, eating, catching a movie, or going to a party at Towson University, Towson life can get old after a while. Luckily, Baltimore City has plenty of tourist attractions, like the Inner Harbor, Baltimore Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, Power Plant Live, Fells Point, and Federal Hill. If Baltimore gets old, drive an extra 45 minutes to Washington DC. From historical monuments to national museums and clubs to concerts, DC is always a good place for new off-campus adventures. There’s enough going on in Baltimore and DC to keep you occupied during your stint at Goucher.

A Walking Distance from Great Shopping and a Bus Ride Away from Baltimore

It is important to realize that Goucher is not in Baltimore as it's address suggests. It is in fact in Towson which is actually a nice town with some attractions of its own. Towson has several grocery stores within walking distance, including a Trader Joe's, many ethnic restaurants, and of course the Towson Town Center which is the largest mall in Maryland. It is possible to take the collegetown shuttle into Baltimore for free, but be warned: it is liable to be late or fail to arrive at scheduled times.

Baltimore Is an Amazing Place to Be

There is so much to do in Baltimore; it's always fun to go down to the Inner Harbor, and there's always a concert or something going on somewhere near there at night. The aquarium is alos great, as well as a lot of historic sites in the downtown area. It's also really easy to get into DC by train. While the Orioles might not be competing in the World Series any time soon, they have a great student discount, and the games are a lot of fun. The Ravens are right around the corner too. While the city can get a little sketchy at night in certain areas, the people are usually very friendly, and I don't think they have any problem with all the college students. I've had so many random conversations with strangers when waiting for the bus. It's really a great place to be.

Towson Is Not Too Exciting but Baltimore Is Just Around the Corner

Towson is a nice, safe area, teeming with college students from both Goucher and Towson University. There are a few good places to eat around campus, like Towson Hot Bagels and Kathmandu Kitchen. You can also find pretty much everything you may need in Towson, without walking for more than 15 or 20 minutes. There are tons of convenient stores (and a huge mall if you are into that kind of shopping). Also on Thursdays there is a nice farmers market. For those into quirky finds there is a cute vintage/consignment store close to campus. Towson may be a little sleepy but it is a convenient place for a college student to live. But even more importantly, Towson is incredibly close to Baltimore (15 minutes or so). There are multiple cost efficient ways to get into the city without taking a car. Baltimore itself is a fantastic city to have nearby. There are lots of funky restaurants and cafes, dance and music clubs, and opportunities for community service and internships. The inner Harbor is a popular area for students to visit, but there are many other lesser-known areas and places to explore. It's true that Baltimore is not the safest city, so its important to be aware and consider traveling with a friend if not familiar with the area. Otherwise, as long as you are smart about where you go, Baltimore is a fantastic place to be around. The city also is home to students from more than three other colleges and Universities.
