  • FMS - Facility Management Services. They perform jobs from custodial services to lawn and building maintenance.
  • GIG - “Get Into Goucher” day is a day of fun and activities planned by the school, and unofficially recognized as the infamous “get drunk at Goucher” day.

  • SAS - Student Administrative Services. Go here to register for classes or for help with your financial-aid package.
  • SI - Supplemental Instruction. These weekly study sessions led by an upperclassman with experience and training in the coursework are a great place to get help on difficult classwork.
  • SRC - Student Recreation Center
  • Stimmy - Stimson Dining Hall
  • The Loop - Loop Road, the main road that circles around campus
  • The Q - The Quindecim, Goucher’s student-run newspaper
  • The Quad - The residential quad, the grassy area with the beach volleyball court
  • The Stimson Smell - The scent that lingers on your clothes after eating in Stimson Dining Hall. No one is quite sure just where it comes from, but students speculate that the blend of grease, curry, and fried chicken aromas may be the culprit.
  • Van Meter Highway - The sidewalk that stretches from Stimson to Van Meter (no, cars can’t drive on it)

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School

  • Athletics draw little attention or support from students.
  • Avoid early morning classes.
  • It takes at least 30 minutes to get into Baltimore.
  • Public transportation sucks.
  • There is a lot of required reading.
  • Tuition and fees increase by at least $1,000 every year.

Tips to Succeed

  • Actually attend class.
  • Attend your SI, even if you don’t need to.
  • Bring your own computer.
  • Check your e-mail at least three times a day.
  • Get involved in student clubs.
  • Learn how to cook.
  • Study abroad.
  • Take classes that you have an interest in, even if they’re not in your major.
  • Try to take all your required general education classes your freshman year.

Traditions

  • Club Rush Day - During the first week of class, student clubs set up information tables along Van Meter Highway to recruit new members. No one passes through without signing up for at least one club.
  • GIG (Get Into Goucher Day) - The date of GIG is kept a secret as long as possible, but it always falls on a Friday afternoon in the spring. At noon, the SRC bell rings, officially canceling classes for the rest of the day. Everyone runs down to the SRC to join the carnival, complete with rides, games, music, food, and entertainment. Previous GIGs included carnival rides, a mechanical bull, Jell-O wrestling, human foosball, psychic readings, and airbrushed tattoos. The evening ends with a huge concert, featuring popular acts like the Sugar Hill Gang and They Might Be Giants.
  • Midnight Madness - The pep rally for Goucher’s basketball teams, held at midnight on the first day of the basketball season. Events include the introduction of the teams and mascot, games, prizes, music, a 3-point shootout contest, and a slam-dunk contest. The most school spirit you’ll ever see at Goucher.
  • Parent Weekend - Held at the beginning of October, students invite their families to check out Goucher life. Highlights include a lunch with Goucher’s president, a student talent show, athletic events, and free transportation to the Inner Harbor.
  • Senior Week - The celebratory week between the end of finals and graduation. The entire week is one big party. The Alumni House and senior class representatives organize events for seniors, including a pub crawl in Fell’s Point, a trip to an amusement park, tickets to an Orioles game, a cookout, and any other events seniors request.
  • Spring Gala - A formal dance held in the spring (like the high school prom, but better). Tickets often sell out, showing how popular this dance is, considering the apathy among students toward most activities.
  • Winter Meltdown - An afternoon of stress relief held before finals week of the fall semester. Activities include free professional massages, board games, miniature golf, and food. The biggest attraction is the car smash: students trash a car with sledgehammers and baseball bats for the ultimate stress relief.

School Spirit

Despite the close-knit community at Goucher, there is a serious lack of school spirit. Athletic events are not well attended by students outside the athletic social circle. Student apathy is also a problem when it comes to on-campus events. Some events are a huge success, such as Get into Goucher Day, Spring Gala, and student talent shows, but lesser established events hardly draw a crowd.
