Since Grand Valley is in the middle of the small town of Allendale, it really is like its own city. Word spreads quickly, so be careful who you tell certain things to. Drinking and drug use are common mostly on the weekends for the "party" crowd. Noise complaints are the most reported in on- and off-campus housing. Most police units will just break up the loud party and send everyone home. Police are not likely to bust you for anything—unless you have been drinking underage at a party or reek of illegal substances.

The police at Grand Valley State are parking-ticket magicians. They really have nothing else better to do than sit and wait for meters to expire or drive around in parking lots to find people without permits. Tickets are generally low in cost, but they are annoying once you accumulate enough of them.

College Is a Party!

GV is a nonstop party for younger students. As a transfer, I went in blind my first year and ended up with three girls who enjoyed drinking and playing with candles next to hair spray in our apartment. I finally went to complain to housing and the director told me it happens all the time and their really was nothing she could do about it unless there was reason to search the apartment (apparently a giant bottle of vodka in our fridge was not enough to call a search). As a conservative person, I have been very disappointed in GV's strictness.
