Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The University has many security features to ensure that its students feel safe. Grand Valley has its own police department—known to students as DPS—which is open 24/7 and during academic breaks, and the officers patrol campus regularly. An emergency notification system is installed to inform students about emergencies and campus closings via email and text messages (to receive these messages by text, students are required to register online). There are emergency call buttons near the front door of every residence hall, and students need a key or keycard to access the residence hall, as well as their individual apartment or room. The entire campus is well-lit, and there is the LGBT Resource Center and the Women's Center on campus for situations that involve discrimination.

Most students feel very safe on and around campus, even when walking home late at night. Crime stats are low, although crimes do happen on rare occasions. Larceny is the most frequent crime on campus. Campus police are willing to escort students home if they feel in danger, and when a situation or suspicion arises, police are quick to respond. In the newer residence halls, the room doors lock automatically, so it is important for students to always carry their key if they leave their room. Also, all windows lock and have screens, which attach on the inside.

Campus Health and Safety

I feel very comfortably on campus. We don't ever hear about campus crimes, minus MIP's or DUI's. I can walk around campus at night without the fear of being in danger.

Saftey Around the Corner

I have always felt safe at Grand Valley. The campus is open and well light at night so you feel comfortabel with your surroundings. The campus police are always driving around both on campus and at the off campus apartments.
