Grinnell has been exceeded my expectations in every way. I dove in with very little to go off of other than internet reviews from sites such as this one. The experience has been incredible so far! Professors are amazing, people are really interesting / kind / great to talk to, resources abound, the campus is beautiful... I could go on. Also, self-governance allows us to create the vibe and rules for our own community, rather than policies being enforced from the top down by administration. COME TO GRINNELL. If you're an offbeat academic, you will love it!

Guys & Girls:
The Girls at Grinnell are top notch. I've seen comments that talk about needing "Grinnell goggles" and such because of unattractive females and I have not had that problem at any point. There are plenty of cute ones and the best part is, they're mostly very intellectual and interesting. Come visit, you'll see what I mean.

There is quite a bit of alcohol and marijuana use here at Grinnell, but, if you are a student who is substance-free, you will not have a problem fitting in. There are many students here who choose not to use and they are not pressured. You will still have plenty to do on the weekends. Also, substance-free housing is available to all students who request it.

Computer labs are all over the place, most of which equipped with pretty powerful mac workstations, but some with lower end windows workstations. All of them are pretty reliable, though, and tech support is always available for both school and personal computers. Printing in B&W is free, and color is a small fee. Overall, I'd say Grinnell has top quality technology and service.

Friendly/quaint small town, but not much off campus.

It is cold in winter but in dorm room and classrooms, it is warm. However, there is no air conditioning in south campus during summer...

Overall facilities are good. But dorm rooms of south campus are ooold but warm....

Health & Safety:
The campus is very safe. People leave their doors unlocked all the time. That's not always a good idea, especially on Saturday nights, since people will steal stuff, but it's safe enough that people think it's worth the risk. I have also seen people leave their laptop on a table while they go to the bathroom. It's a small enough campus that there really isn't any need for blue phones.

People like to drink on weekends, although a lot of people also avoid it and I've never had no one sober to hang out with. People smoking pot is definitely a problem.

The dining hall food has generally one tasty option per meal, but sometimes there really isn't anything to eat. The desserts are always excellent, and there is a full-time ice cream machine. It's hard to find non-fatty food (besides the salad bar), though. They like frying things.

Grinnell College has great professors, and the classes are challenging but not overwhelming. The languages are especially intense. When you sign up for classes, the departments are supposed to figure out how to give everyone the class they want by adding or dropping sections. Even if they shift your schedule, you can add/drop to change it back. The main problem is not having enough time to take all the classes you want.

You do not have much to choose from in the dining hall. It gets repetitive.
College Sophomore 2012-10-29T21:16:20Z
It is convenient yet a bit costly. There is not much variety.

I love the town of Grinnell, and I adore the Grinnell campus. It honestly feels like Stars Hallow, from Gilmore Girls- a quaint, small, close-knit community. And Grinnell College is the epitome of such- it's such an intentional community, and everyone really takes care of eachother.

There are drugs at Grinnell, predominantly marijuana. There is a very active drinking scene. But you will never feel pressured to do something you're not comfortable with.

It's Iowa. There are hot, humid summers, and bitterly cold winters. But it's nice that you get all the seasons!

Not That Big – Sports are not that big at Grinnell, and tend to be somewhat clique-y, though for the most part everyone is friendly. It doesn't help that most of the teams, with the exception of the basketball team and the non-official water polo and ultimate frisbee teams, suck.

There is a good percentage of international students. People come from all types of backgrounds - some are richer and pay tuition in full and others are on scholarship. The majority are very accepting of others and their values.

Most dorms are co-ed. You can request single-sex floors or sub-free dorms.

Lots of paperwork; they double-check everything; and I felt like I was constantly being asked to fill out forms. In the end it was worth it, I got decent financial aid. Not as much as I would have liked though. And then figuring out student loans was a hassle. But the people at Grinnell are really helpful. It's just the amount of time and paperwork that is annoying.

If you enjoy extreme weather, you'll love Grinnell! I've never experienced the seasons as intense anywhere else.

Guys & Girls:
Personally, I don't think there is anyone hideous, nor is there anyone that looks like they were featured in an Abercombie spread. However, because Grinnell is such a small school, some students use Grinnell Goggles philosophy, which pretty much compares Grinnellians to each other, and not the out side world.
That doesn't mean there aren't attractive people!

A Rural Experience – Grinnell is a very small town and although there are not many commercial stores or much nightlife there, the community activities more than compensate. Go square dancing in a nearby ranch, heckle your favourite politicians when they pass on through or maybe even grab some ice cream at the Dari Barn. In Grinnell everyone is really hospitable and kind, businesses are very student friendly (especially with discounts), and you'll always feel safe both on campus and in town. Plus the college life spills over into the community so there's never a dull moment (FYI students and community members even came together last year to throw frisbees and break a Guinness World Record. Cool huh? )
Sorry, there are no reviews.
