College Prowler Take

Grinnell is going through a revamping of its facilities. The first step was the construction of East Campus. The process continued with the demolition of Darby gym. Although intentions were good, the move failed to appease the student body, and many students voiced their opinions by sporting “Save Darby” T-shirts.

The next major project was construction of the modern Campus Center. The current Health Center and Stonewall Resource Center had to be torn down to make room, but both cafeterias, most of the multicultural club offices, an art gallery, and KDIC, the Grinnell radio station has been moved into this building. The new buildings have been built in a completely different style from that of Grinnell’s older Gothic architecture, and rather than the red and black brick stonework that decorates most of North and South Campus (there are few things that can make a lecture building look cooler than gargoyles over the doors), a newer, more modern apparatus will line the walls of campus facilities and eateries. Even in Iowa, college campuses inevitably change with the times.

We have nice buildings here. Our new science and art buildings are very pleasing to the eye. Also, they fit very well with the atmosphere on campus.

The facilities are forever a work in progress. The new athletic facility is done, and the student center is being built right now. The athletic center is really nice with tons of equipment and plasma screen TVs.

The soccer fields are the best I’ve ever seen. The new athletic center is very nice, but the older one was good, too. The computer labs on campus are good too, but they get a bit crowded during hell and finals weeks.

I think the facilities are nice....

I think the facilities are nice. Still, the College is making an effort to improve them. I was pleased with the old dorms; still, the College built new dorms. I was pleased with the Forum (student center); now, the College is building a new Campus Center. I was pleased with the PEC (athletic building); however, the College felt that building a new one was necessary. Grinnell seems very concerned with keeping up-to-date, for better or for worse.

The Forum Grill is really satisfying and has lots of good stuff to eat. The computer labs are nice, especially the ones in the academic buildings.

Favorite Things To Do

Many students take advantage of the free movies in Harris and on the South Lounge of the Forum on weekends. Plays (also free) are put on both by the college theater department and the Grinnell Independent Theatre group, but tickets (which can usually be found at the box office in Bucksbaum) tend to go rather quickly. The numerous bands that Grinnell brings to the stage also tend to attract a large crowd.

When you need to take a break from studying, there are pool tables in the Harris Center and the Forum, a climbing wall and swimming pool in the PEC, art shows at Faulkner gallery in Bucksbaum, and frequent concerts including classical, student, and professional performances. Punk bands from across the nation are booked regularly.
