Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Grinnell students are rarely hot. While there are a few tan, thin, blond girls and a handful of buff guys with chiseled features and moussed hair, if you come to Grinnell to look for them, you’ll be disappointed. Few girls even wear makeup, and some guys haven’t showered or changed clothes in a week. If you’re willing to look for something beyond a Calvin Klein commercial, you may be in luck. Grinnell students are intelligent, socially-concerned, fun-loving, friendly individuals. They’re capable of holding a conversation after an evening of drunken debauchery. Believe it or not, some girls actually like the shaggy, rugged, hippy look on guys, and there are guys who like girls who are spunky and unique looking.

While finding a make-out buddy on a Saturday night is usually not that difficult, finding a girlfriend or boyfriend might be. It’s notoriously difficult to stay in a relationship at Grinnell. Nobody’s exactly sure why it’s so difficult to keep one dance partner, but it may have to do with the general acceptability of making out with random people or casual sex. That freewheeling atmosphere probably puts a lot of strain on relationships, as does the unwieldy amount of academic stress. However, many Grinnellians marry each other after they graduate.

Hipster Haven

The greatest conundrum of Grinnell is how much effort students put into being unattractive. Hipsterdom is, unfortunately, pervasive. The students try so hard to be "alternative" and artsy, but they end up just smelling funny and looking disheveled. On top of that, so many of the students are so insanely idealistic and sensitive to any hint of un-political-correctness that its difficult to enjoy their company.

Lots of Support

Everyone is pretty open to everyone around them. There is a lot of campus community especially when biased motivated incidents occur. There are a lot of hipsters on campus and athletes, but there is also the average looking person. Dress is mostly jeans and a buttoned shirt. Social life is very accepting, there are always parties during the weekend, concerts, and great bonding activities. Relationships seem to be very serious.

Hipster Muffins

Guys and girls are generally attractive here. I mean, this isn't NYU and you're not going to see like, the Olsen twins eating pizza in the Dhall, but most people here would fall under "cute" in my opinion. There's also a pretty visible hipster scene, and those people are pretty snappy dressers. I would say girls here are generally more attractive than guys. But I don't think you're going to get here and go "whoa, I will never have sex again." Unless you actually are the Olsen twins. In which case, I'm sorry.

Facts

Social Scene

The student body at Grinnell tends to be friendly and accepting of pretty much anyone. It's easy to find a group of friends at the beginning of school, and there really are no cliques or social circles, so ultimately, it becomes easy to meet people through friends. It's also relatively easy to simply bump into someone and start a conversation. This kind of interaction shortly becomes commonplace in a small college when you see the same people every day.

Hookups or Relationships?

Most students on campus seem to be more interested in hooking up with someone than actually dating. While dating does happen on a regular basis, there is absolutely no pressure to have a boyfriend or girlfriend, and a lot of students would rather do without, so there are usually plenty of singles out on the weekends who want nothing more than a good fling.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Typically, the best place to meet people of the opposite sex is wherever you happen to be hanging out. Guys and girls tend to hang out in the same social circles, and people usually get to know each other as friends before they begin dating or hooking up. Beyond that, Harris parties are renowned for being the place where hookups are as common as stalks in a cornfield. Hooking up at Grinnell is quite easy, that is if you can just work up the confidence level (or intoxication level) necessary to latch onto the dance partner of your choice.

Dress Code

The Grinnell style of dress covers the entire spectrum, but it tends to be heavy on the peculiar or hippie side. Most students will simply go with a pair of scuffed-up jeans that haven't been washed in a few days and a dingy T-shirt to match, but it's not uncommon to see designer bowler hats and camel hair coats on guys or broomstick skirts and trench coats on girls. Nobody will give you a second glance as long as you have something on.

Did You Know?
  • There’s a widely-circulating rumor that Playboy magazine ranked Grinnell as having the least attractive student body. Another equally-circulated rumor says that Playboy also ranked Grinnell’s women as being more sexually satisfied than women at any other college in the country.
  • Sixty percent of Grinnellians marry other Grinnellians.
