College Prowler Take

Few students on campus actually own cars. Except for traveling between cities, there’s really no need for them. Even if you’re going downtown when it’s below zero degrees outside, in the time it takes you to walk to your car, get it started, navigate the icy roads around town, and find a parking space, you could already be warm and browsing through the menu inside Pagliai’s. Even for those long road trips to Chicago, you can usually finagle some vehicle-owning sucker into going with you. This ultimately translates into limited demand for parking on campus. The parking lots near the dorms tend to be small, but instead of stretching a block away from your warm and cozy home, they’re all right across the street. If these are full (and often they are), it’s about another hundred feet to another parking lot outside the PEC that normally has plenty of available parking space.

However, there are some confusing parking regulations. Some of the parking lots, like the ones in front of the Admissions building, are only for faculty and visitors. There are also many 24 hour only parking spots located sporadically around campus, and students are frequently fined for leaving their cars there too long. Aside from these minor inconveniences, however, students have little to no trouble at all finding a place to park on campus.

I never have trouble parking, but I live near South Campus. I don’t know about other areas. Also keep in mind that Grinnell is about to become a massive construction zone. So God only knows about the future of the Grinnell parking situation. Something tells me it’s not at the top of His priority list.

It’s sometimes very difficult to find parking here. Well, legal parking anyway.

Yeah, not too many people have cars here, but most students here are friendly enough to let someone else borrow their car if they need it.

Parking can definitely be a pain in the butt, but only if you are picky about parking somewhere near where you actually live. For more places to park, it is highly recommended that one purchase the $50 parking permit that allows you to park in specially-designated student lots (which are sometimes full). Otherwise, you may be stuck with street parking, which is not entirely convenient.

Parking passes are cheap but not rationed well, so sometimes finding a parking place can be difficult.
