Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The weather in Grinnell can be downright schizophrenic. There are days in the winter when you can wear shorts and a T-shirt, and days in the middle of July when you’ll need a sweatshirt. When students arrive, the weather can be incredibly hot, and the soup-like humidity hanging in the air makes every last drop of sweat stick to your skin. There are days when there’s not even a breeze, and there’s no air conditioning in a lot of the dorms. Grinnell is also in "tornado alley." Every Thursday at 9 a.m. in the spring and fall, test runs are done. The ear-piercing siren can sometimes be heard at random times, whether or not there’s actually severe weather in the area.

In the winter, make sure to have your heaviest clothes handy. The walk from your dorm can seem like an eternity when your face and neck go numb in the first few steps. If you’ve never had your nose hairs freeze before, you will know what it feels like by the time you leave Grinnell. Between freezing and roasting, however, there are some beautiful nights when you can sit out on the Loggia under a clear sky and watch the stars, or spring days when there’s nothing better than playing Frisbee on MacEachron Field. If anything, the Grinnell climate is perfect for the thousands of fireflies that take up residence on campus every summer.

Bipolar Weather

The Weather at Grinnell is very unpredictable. It could snow one day and then be super warm the next with everyone wearing shorts. The wind is especially chilly.
