College Prowler Take

Grove City College offers 20 varsity sports at the NCAA Division III level. The college is a member of the President’s Athletic Conference, which includes other schools like Washington and Jefferson, Westminster, and Thiel. Athletes are encouraged to put their academics before their athletics. The Wolverine Arena is never filled to its 1,600-person capacity. Student-athletes frequently feel under supported and, in some cases, dislike the interference of Grove City College’s academic rigor. However, a band of enthusiastic students—dubbed the Crimson Crazies—have made varsity athletic fan support a more mainstream phenomenon. Grove City College also offers club sports including men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and men’s rugby. Club sports attract good fan support, but are not insured or financially supported by the administration—a sore point with avid club team members. Grove City College intramural sports attract over half of the student body—a mixture of all-around athletes and wannabes.

Freshmen wandering through the Physical Learning Center (PLC) may be mystified by the maze of hallways that access pools, racquetball courts, and a dance floor. Facilities here are safe, but dated. A 200-meter suspended track and a newly expanded weight room offer ample indoor workout space. The four tons of free weights and variety of machines are usually busy, but there is rarely a long wait. Many freshmen decry the mandatory fitness and wellness classes. However, students frequently run throughout the town and enjoy pick-up games of volleyball, basketball, racquetball, and ultimate Frisbee.

C+

Most students at Grove City play sports. It's a very athletic schools, and there are many options playing. The varsity sports are not as supported as they should be, the games (doesn't matter the sport) not high in attendance, and the stands always always lacking in filled seats. The IM sports are crazy filled, but still not many people come to watch, they just play.

Varsity sports aren’t particularly important for the most part at Grove City. We have them, of course, and the games are usually decently attended. IM sports are pretty big. It’s very easy to form teams and compete in basically any of the IM sports.

Athletics are not big enough. I...

Athletics are not big enough. I feel bad for the lack of support our athletes have. I think this is connected with the overall poor school spirit that Grove City has. They definitely need to work on that. As for IM sports, they score big time. Nearly everyone is involved with them, and often times you will see bigger turnouts at these games than the varsity ones.

Varsity sports draw a medium-sized...

Varsity sports draw a medium-sized crowd, I would say. But if you would compare them to the sports of other schools, the crowd is kind of pathetic. School spirit is not very present, and people usually attend games for lack of anything else to do. Plus the varsity sports are not known to have a very good record, which doesn’t help with the crowd situation. IM sports, however, are widely participated in. The school offers many different types of sports so all kinds of people can participate. It’s a good way for students to compete healthily and release some energy. I, myself, was a big participant in IM sports, and I participated in events I never thought I would like IM football, volleyball, and basketball. It doesn’t matter if you are good or not; it’s just fun to participate. Overall, IM sports are more fun because they are more casual and you can actually participate in them.

School Spirit

Grovers may not be well-known for their spirit, but a group called the “Crimson Crazies” has helped remedy that reputation. With a touch of paint and a hearty yell, these students cheer for their peers both on the field and the court.

Getting Tickets

No tickets are needed at a Grove City College sporting event. Students may be asked to present an ID card.

Most Popular Sports

On the varsity level, basketball, soccer, and baseball get more attention than most others—a definite commentary on a lack of support for varsity athletics. Club sports attract enthusiastic fans, but IM sports are the most popular draw. Basketball, volleyball, and ultimate Frisbee also get wide student support.

Most Overlooked Teams

Club teams generally get broad fan support, but little or no finances from the administration, due to insurance issues. Also, the Grove City College hockey team attracts a noticeable fan following.
