Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Hoping to leave your AIM profile up all day? Grovers have the opportunity to stay wired everyday for all four years. Every dorm, and most classrooms, are equipped with network connections, and GCC has recently implemented a wireless network system in HAL (the Hall of Arts and Letters), SAC (the Student Activity Center), and the courtyard between the buildings. Since 1994, the College has offered laptops and printers that become the students’ upon graduation. Even the outdated models provide indispensable access to word processing, e-mailing, the Internet, department-specific software, and online blackboards.

Students sometimes complain about an unreliable network, a confusing homepage, slow online class registration, frequent hard drive crashes, and incompetent Technological Learning Center (TLC) staff. While horror stories of computer crashes before finals float around campus, students should not be shocked to have nearly glitch-free use of their own computer system. The network has been improved over the past couple years and TLC staff does their best to give student laptops a little “tender love and care” (TLC from TLC-—get it?). Within the past couple years, the network suffered from student hackers and a Blaster virus. However, with a lot of overtime and anti-virus patches, TLC worked to eliminate both hackers and viruses. If students want to be sure to get a computer and a quick print job in the TLC lab, they should print early in the mornings or soon after a class period has begun.

Grove City Laptops

Grove City College provides all of their students with a laptop and a printer (which you get to keep if you graduate from there!) The computers are really nice but if your computer ever has a problem, the technology learning center (TLC) will gladly assist you in fixing it! At the TLC, you can also print for free so you don't waste your paper and ink. The TLC only gets crowded early in the morning when people are rushing to print things out before class. As for the WIFI, its a little inconsistent depending on what building you're in.

Poor Bandwidth Downgrades Research Ability

The school's network is alright...when there aren't 2,000+ people using it. The problem is that they don't have enough bandwidth, which makes it (at times) extremely slow. Normally it is responsive, but once very 10 minutes it may cut out entirely (for up to ten minutes) or become very slow for a few minutes.

GCC Computers

We are given a computer, flash drive, docking station, printer and a backpack as a freshman. These are used everywhere on campus. They are incredible handy and useful. I am a big sponsor of this feature.

Each student is provided with a Campus Portal account. Campus Portal enables students to find campus news, search online for course schedules, register for classes, review financial accounts, and receive final grades.

Many professors use course management systems for posting syllabi, assignments, grades, and other relevant information. All students will be provided with an account on Blackboard. Blackboard is a program online that makes it easier for students and professors to share information with the entire class at one time. It is easy to learn to use, and students become comfortable using Blackboard in no time.
