School Slang
  • Chapel Card: Each student receives 16 paper chapel cards per semester and is required to hand one in after each chapel service that they attend.
  • Civ classes: Required core classes in the civilization series; also called humanities core.
  • Crawford Social: A large room in the basement of the Crawford Administrative Building.
  • Creeking: A traditional activity that involves throwing a newly engaged guy into Wolf Creek's muddy depths.
  • Desk Hostess: A female student, paid by the school to sit at the lobby entrance of women's dormitories that answers phones and assists residents and visitors.
  • Dessert Theater: An on-campus event where senior honoraries present a jazz-club atmosphere featuring student talents and sweet treats.
  • El Ed: Elementary Education Major.
  • Faculty Follies: A yearly event where faculty members present their talents and "follies" for the student body.
  • FitWell: Fitness and Wellness, the required freshman health/phys ed class.
  • GCC: A faster way to get out the name of the school, Grove City College.
  • Gee: Geedunk, the food services provided by the student union.
  • Greek Unity Week: A week where Greeks participate in pledging activities and celebrate their differences.
  • Grove City Family: A title that the administration has used to describe the people and environment of Grove City College.
  • Grover: Generally defined as any student who attends Grove City College. Also more technically defined as a freshman girl who has been kissed by an upperclassman guy on Rainbow Bridge.
  • HAL: Hall of Arts and Letters; the name will change if someone donates the necessary amount to have the building named in their honor.
  • Huma Classes: The humanities core classes required for all students.
  • IM Room: The intramural room-divided into two parts, green and brown.
  • Inner Quad: The quad located inside MAP Dormitory.
  • Intervis: Inter-visitation, weekend hours when students visit members of the opposite sex in their dorm rooms.
  • Ket Rec: Ketler Recreational Facility located in Ketler Dormitory.
  • MAP (cafeteria): The Mary Anderson Pew Café located in the Mary Anderson Pew Dormitory.
  • MAP (dormitory): Mary Anderson Pew Dormitory, not to be confused with MEP.
  • Mechie: A nickname for the mechanical engineering students.
  • MEP: Mary Ethel Pew Dormitory, not to be confused with MAP.
  • Mole Hole: The basement of West Dormitory.
  • OBOB: Orientation Board Off Broadway.
  • Old MAP: A fancy room used for receptions, dances, and dessert theaters.
  • Pew: Pew Fine Arts Center.
  • Rainbow Bridge: The Stone Bridge that arches over Wolf Creek and connects Upper Campus to Lower Campus. It is the magic spot where an upperclassman guy can kiss a freshman girl and make her a "Grover."
  • Ring by Spring: Legendary Grove City "mandate" for students to be married by thei end of their stay at college.
  • SAC: The Breen Student Union, aka the Student Union, aka the Student Activities Center
  • Senior Scramble: The mad dash that some seniors make to get a girlfriend or boyfriend before leaving Grove City College.
  • SGA: Student Government Association.
  • Shoe in the Door: Common convention used to make sure the dorm door is the required six inches open.
  • Sparkie: A nickname for the electrical engineering students.
  • Stacks: The quiet library hallways with desks for quiet studiers.
  • TLC: Technological Learning Center.
  • Vespers: A Sunday evening worship service held in the chapel, a chapel card is accepted.
  • Where your best hasn't been good enough since 1876.: Supposed former motto of the College.
  • Wolf Creek: The murky stream that separates Upper Campus from Lower Campus.
Traditions
  • Campus Christianity: For many prospective students, the Christian presence is a large factor in their decision process. Below are details and opinions regarding Grove City's Christian atmosphere. Grove City College states and enforces rules regarding academic honesty, alcohol and drug use, and sexual misconduct. Sexual misconduct, including premarital sex or homosexual behavior, will result in suspension, at least until the end of the semester. Grove City College offers approximately 50 chapel opportunities per semester and requires that students attend 16 chapels per semester for graduation. Grove City College encourages students to attend a local church of their choice and offers numerous religious and service organizations.
  • Creeking: Students will frequently hear the rhythmic chant "Wolf Creek" during the warmth of fall or spring. Friends will creek a peer if his girl said "yes" to the big question or for other significant occasions. Creeking involves carrying the fellow student across campus chanting "Wolf Creek" and then depositing him in the muddy water. Girls are infrequently creeked, but they may be expected to give their slimy new fiancé a hug after he gets his mud bath. Due to a change in Wolf Creek's water flow, creeking may soon be banned as unsafe.
  • Greek Sweethearts: Sororities and fraternities frequently pick a person of the opposite sex as their sweetheart. The sweetheart is viewed as the only one, outside of the fraternity or sorority, worthy of wearing their colors or letters. Sweethearts are often creeked.
  • The Quad: "Don't walk on the quad" is a common yell during the spring months when a student takes a rebellious stroll across the central patch of lush grass. Years ago, an endowment agreement designated funding for the college if students agreed not to walk on the central plot of grass on campus. Urban legend has it that a sniper lives in the science building and shoots at any rebellious quad-walkers. However, many students voluntarily honor the tradition and leave the central plot of grass alone.
  • Rainbow Bridge: Rainbow Bridge is a favorite campus spot for a romantic moment. The stone bridge arches over Wolf Creek. If an upperclassman guy kisses a freshman girl on that bridge, she becomes a "Grover."
  • Serenades: RAs often encourage their freshmen to practice a song and then serenade members of the opposite sex. At the beginning of the semester, girls can be seen crooning to a male audience on and near Memorial Lawn. Guys, in their turn, congregate in MAP's inner quad where windows are jammed with an enthusiastic female audience.
Urban Legends
  • If your roommate dies of mysterious circumstances, you are given an immediate 4.0.
  • The "don't walk on the grass" rul is enforced by a sniper from the tower of Rockwell Hall.
  • Urban legend has it that a ghost named Wendolyn inhabits the Pew Fine Arts Center. The ghost's presence is said to account for any strange noises or for any glitches in the electrical wiring.
Favorite Things To Do
In addition to a great many IM sports and various organizations, the campus organizes a number of different events. A special "coffeehouse event" is conducted once every month where people can register to perform in the Student Union. Two major dances, The Crimson and Homecoming, are conducted each year, in addition to many more sponsored by fraternities or different charities. Beyond that, however, the college has a great many places for students to sweat, study, or just socialize. Many students enjoy playing Frisbee on the campus' many playing fields. Frisbee football and extreme Frisbee are especially popular. A great many people use the facilities at the gym, especially the racquetball courts, which are popular both with students and professors. And during the winter, there is a great deal of sledding.
