Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek Grovers advertise their fraternity or sorority with a T-shirt that says, “the insiders just can’t explain and the outsiders just can’t understand.” And many non-Greeks have no desire to understand. Because the College is a private Christian institution, its sororities and fraternities are not local chapters of the national system. All Greek housing is on campus. While men are usually guaranteed housing with their fraternity, women may not be guaranteed housing on the sorority hall.

Greeks make up about 15 percent of the student body, but Greek life does not dominate the College social scene. Some Greeks complain that the school newspaper misrepresents or under represents their importance on campus. They feel judged by the administration and non-Greeks. Non-Greeks, in turn, often view the noise and secrecy of pledge week with suspicion and skepticism. Besides the usual semester parties, Grove City College Greeks also sponsor annual fundraisers. Events like basketball tournaments, walk-a-thons, and a “Big Man on Campus” male beauty pageant have raised thousands for charities like the American Cancer Society. The nine independent men’s housing groups are less formal associations than their fraternity counterparts, but offer similar friendships and activities. Men can have the benefit of living near friends without the secrecy and stigma that many Greeks carry. Since Greeks and independents are required to live near each other—even on the same halls—misunderstandings are more obvious than other school settings where Greeks have housing.

Their Presence Is Known but Not Dominant

The Greek life at GCC is not affiliated with national Greek life. There is a variety of fraternities and sororities to choose from. There appears to be a lot of tension between those who go Greek and those who stay independent, but that is a generalization that does not hold true for everyone. Sororities and fraternities participate in service projects and usually host some sort of annual, campus-wide event. There is also Greek dinner on Tuesdays at 5 pm in Hicks cafeteria, so if you're independent and want to find somewhere to sit I'd suggest going to MAP cafeteria or going to Hicks before 5. Greeks do not have their own houses. Instead, they have block housing on the floors of a regular dormitory. For guys, there are also housing groups that have Greek letters but do not require pledging. Greek life gets a little obnoxious during pledge week, but in general it's not that big of a deal.

Not That Big

Greek life at Grove City isn't dominant. None of the fraternities/sororities are nationally acclaimed. However a lot of the students will get involved in the Greek life for the social benefits and block housing benefits.

Greek Unity Is Abundant

There are currently 8 sororities and 8 fraternities on campus. Greek life is what you make of it. Being in a fraternity or sorority at Grove City doesn't consume your life and are much less expensive than other colleges. Even if you don't pledge, rushing is great way to meet people!
