Social Scene
Social aptitude varies greatly. There is a contingency of nerds who don't practice good hygiene and keep to their rooms. However, a large number of students are academically strong, athletically inclined, and socially apt. Classes, study groups, service organizations, clubs, and worship services offer numerous opportunities for acquaintances and friendships. The campus size and closeness guarantees that Grovers recognize many of their peers, even if they never share a class or a club activity.
Hookups or Relationships?
One-night stands are completely foreign to most Grovers. Students generally appreciate the school's Christian values that designate sex only for marriage. Lobbies are a favorite spot to chat, hold hands, look deeply into a sweethearts eyes, and give that extra-long goodbye hug and kiss. Single students, or even attached students who don't make out in public, are often aggravated by the public displays of affection. Some singles resent the fact that eating a couple of meals with someone might raise the question, "So, how long have you been going out with so-and-so?" A glance down the upperclassman women's residence will reveal a collection of homemade engagement posters. It is not uncommon for Grovers to meet freshman year, date for two years, and get engaged before they graduate. Harbison Chapel is a popular spot, not only to pray about a relationship, but also to tie the knot.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
Orientation Week offers numerous chances for guys and girls to meet. In fact, many upperclassmen look back and can remember who their square dance partner or their Dean's Breakfast "date" was. The administration has traditionally encouraged student relationships-to the point where some students scramble to have a "significant other" by the end of their senior year. Romantically interested or not, guys and girls frequently interact over books or on library study breaks. Campus weekend activities like concerts, dances, movies, or talent shows offer inexpensive dates or group activity options. The small group of hard-core partiers may hook up at off-campus events in Pittsburgh or nearby at Slippery Rock University. Guys frequently flaunt their muscles in pickup football or ultimate Frisbee. Girls might join them, or readjust their tan lines in the MAP Inner Quad. Technically, male visitors are unwelcome during tanning times, but some guys will find a reason to visit their bikini-clad friends. However, Bible studies, local churches, or Inner City Outreach teams are also a common back-drop for the boy-meets-girl phenomenon.
Dress Code
Dress is much more diverse than other aspects at this school. A majority of students dress in a casual, tasteful manner. Several seem unaware or at least unapologetic that they are wearing clothing almost a decade out of style-they do what they want. Another small group tries to sport the latest style-as short and skimpy as possible. Several students roll out of bed into class, and a small contingency perpetually lives in comfy athletic clothes. Jeans are a must-have, but students frequently dress up to give tours, presentations, or just to look professional. Most women bring a semi-formal dress from home for campus dances. Jonathan Passavant, class of 2002, is a model for Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie & Fitch, Guess, Giorgio Armani, and more. He also is the face of Estee Lauder's fragrance "Intuition."
