Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most Guilford students view their classes and professors as the highlight of the school. Although many end up dissatisfied with one particular professor, they are often pleased with the rest of their classes. The majority of professors are very approachable and caring. You’ll never have any 200-student intro classes at Guilford—and hardly any classes over 30, for that matter. Many classes are primarily discussion based. Some classes require that you participate or risk a lower grade. Everyone is on a first name basis, which, at the very least, gives the feeling and illusion of a friendly relationship with your teachers. At Guilford, there are no teaching assistants, and there is often a focus on peer group work and review. Classes are not horribly difficult to get into, and unless the class size is above normal, you might have a chance at talking to the professor and getting the class you want. Most students enjoy their classes, including their interdisciplinary/liberal arts requirements, and they find their studies sufficiently challenging. The Study Abroad program at Guilford is an exceptional extension of the traditional college academic experience. There are Guilford Study Abroad programs all over the world including semesters in England, Italy, Germany, France, Mexico, China, and Africa. Since these programs are directly connected with the school, credits are applied without transfers. There are also several programs associated with Guilford that allow for a single student to spend a semester in other areas such as Japan. Financial aid is also a factor for many who attend Guilford, and around 70 percent of the student body has help through scholarships, grants, loans, or on-campus employment.

Intensive Writing, Challenging, Overall Good Courses

Guilford College is known as being an intensive writing school. It's proven to be a real challenge, as far as time goes, primarily because I also work full time. I've written a lot during each semester, but have also learned a lot. The Criminal Justice and other instructors I've had so far have been excellent. (There have been a couple of very knowledgeable, but "odd", professors, but I guess it's this way everywhere.) One of my favorite classes was one which was a requirement, but not even in my major, so it can be surprisingly good. So far, I've enjoyed attending Guilford College and I plan to finish my degree here.

Available, Helpful, and Knowlegable

I am a CCE student at Guilford (adult returning to college). The resources for adult students are outstanding. The professors have been supportive, inspiring, available, and most of all encouraging. The curriculum is challenging but its even more rewarding when you succeed. Classes are small and classroom discussion is a vital portion of the curriculum and grades achieved. I love campus and attending class.

Everyone at Guilford calls everyone else by their first names, including deans, staff, professors and the president.

Some academic departments have lounges for their students, but other students from other majors are often welcome. Some lounge locations include those in upstairs Bauman, Duke, and Frank Family Science Center.
