Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most of the dorms are in central campus, so Guilford students can roll out of bed and stumble to all the major academic buildings in a matter of minutes. Two of the biggest dorms—and the most common placement for unwary freshmen—are Milner and Binford. Both are coed, and are mostly separated by wings. Milner has been compared to a mental institution with long hallways and closed doors. Binford creates fond memories of freshman bonding for many Guilford students, whether you lived there or not. Many residents keep their doors open while in their rooms, and there always seems to be music and chatting in the hallways. Other benefits of Binford include the study lounges on each floor, some of which have kitchens. Bryan, despite what any admissions book will tell you, is the party dorm. You may think it’s a wonderful idea to live with seven of your closest friends in Bryan’s suites, but keep in mind that “suite living” can just as likely create heated drama as it can harmony and friendship. For women, Mary Hobbs and Shore are the single-gender options. Mary Hobbs is by far the most interesting dorm on campus. Some males say avoid Mary Hobbs, probably due to outgoing women and the large lesbian population that traditionally resides there. English is the solo, men-only dorm. It has alternately been a refuge for jocks, gays, and more studious men looking to get away from the coed atmosphere. For upperclassmen, the options for on-campus housing are much more appealing, like the apartments and the alternative houses, such as the Pines, Victory, and Hilderbrant. Most of the houses are away from dorms and academic buildings, and are closer to the vast Guilford woods or the front edges of campus. “Alternative houses” are almost always occupied by older students. Recently, they have become theme-based, so students must apply to be a part of a house.

Dorms Are Meh for Freshmen.

As a freshman, you are put in either Milner or Binford. Both dorms suck, binford is quiet, with larger, nicer rooms. Milner is more of a party dorm, and its inhabitants often compare it to a mental hospital for its long medical looking hallways.

The next year, most people seem to move to Bryan, which is disgusting, and gross to live in, so everyone makes up for the squalor by drinking as much as possible as frequently as possible.

If you are lucky, you can (as an upperclassmen) live in one of the many theme houses (basically small frats) or the New or Old apartments, which are pretty sweet as well.

Milner Living

milner is one of the two freshman dorms and it's great. everything is kept clean (as clean as possible for college) and most people keep their doors propped open when they're in so there's lots of opportunity to meet new people and socialize.

Cleaning Service

Yes, for laundry: Laundry Logic, (336) 316-3634. Otherwise, coin washers and dryers are available in every main dorm. The Wash Pub in Quaker Village (across the street) also has cleaning services, as well as coin laundry and a bar. All the major dorms are cleaned weekly or twice weekly by Guilford Staff. This includes bathrooms, hallways and lounges but not personal rooms. The apartments and the alternative houses are not cleaned by staff except occasionally during breaks and must be kept up by the residents. Toilet paper and other supplies are not included in residences not cleaned by staff. Only the bathrooms are cleaned in Bryan.

Did You Know?
  • Most people in Bryan and the houses buy cheap furniture from thrift stores, get it off the side of the road, or from past residents for their common areas.
  • You get more compact and stackable furniture in Milner so you can bunk your beds or have your desk underneath. You sometimes share a dresser with your roommate in Milner.
  • If you lose your key, it will cost $50 to get a new one made.
  • The cable television on campus is free, but with limited channels. It includes a variety of the standard networks, cable channels, and local channels.
  • Any on-campus room may be searched during official breaks by Campus Life to see if you are blatantly not following the rules regarding banned residential hall items.
  • Each of the dorms gives singles to RAs and hall directors, even in dorms where you can not have a single normally. Also, there are larger apartment-like rooms for Hall Directors in some dorms. All RAs are students and most Hall Directors are students.
