Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Guilford seems to have great diversity of mind and perspective, although most people are on the liberal side of the spectrum. For several years, one man was known as “The Republican,” simply because he was outspoken on his mainstream conservative ideals, and so he was easily identified among other Guilford students. The activist groups are very devoted for what causes they see as critical. Trips to political protests have been quite common over the last deacde, as has a steady push for voter registration. Another yearly trip is to the SOA (School of the Americas) protest in Georgia. Two students even received jail time in 2003 for their civil disobedience by repeatedly crossing the military protected line. A few formal conscious objectors can be found, in part due to the Quaker influence. Forevergreen promotes care of the Earth and helps with some major recycling projects on campus. The general student population seems to care about recycling, as well. There are normally groups of two trashcans throughout campus, one for trash, the other for recyclable items. The dumpsters near each residence hall also include one for recycling and another for trash. It is rare to see students blatantly littering on campus. A considerable population of students have vegetarian, vegan, and organic based diets.

There is a good diversity of people from all over the country, although often North Carolinians are attracted to the college. As in most groups gathered from around the country, people enjoy exploring their regional difference in speech, tradition, and lifestyle. As for racial diversity, groups do not always mix as well as they could, but it is in no way a threatening environment for minorities. In general, people get along and are usually friendly to one another.

Eye opening experience

Coming to Guilford College, I didn't particularly care about diversity, or social justice.

But the people here are of all different races, religions, and sexuality. I've never had these differences shoved in my face, but when I showed interest in learning more I was slowly brought into a culture of respect, acceptance, and learning. I realized that the very conventional world I was bought up in was small, that there was so much more out there, and so many people who are discriminated against because of stereotypes and ignorance.

Guilford College, which is a Quaker school (I didn't know what a Quaker was until I got here), is a very progressive and safe space. I've learned a lot about seeing people for who they are, rather than letting gender, sexuality, race, or religion define them as stereotypes.

Facts

Gay Pride

The Guilford community is very open to all students, regardless of sexual preference. They are a presence on campus, but not an overwhelming one. The students are visible, vocal, and generally feel comfortable. PRIDE has a significant membership and sponsors weekly social events, as well as the yearly Coming Out and Gender Bender Balls.

Political Activity

Guilford likes to consider itself extremely politically active and interested in current events. Guilford students are relentlessly liberal, and Democrats may find that they are even sometimes less extreme than other students. Activism based clubs include: Forevergreen, GANe, Young Democrats, and Amnesty International

Economic Status

Most Guilford students come from middle-class backgrounds, although there are people from both economic extremes. Those who are rich do not tend to flaunt it. Many people come from hippie and liberal parents, and sometimes want to act as if they could survive being less well-off than they may actually be. A large majority of students have a significant amount of loans or assistance by some sort of financial aid to afford to attend Guilford.

Most Common Religions

Most students are Quaker or are of various Christian denominations. Atheist and agnostic students are also represented. Religious diversity is comfortable on campus. Religious organizations on campus include: GCRO, Guilford Christian Fellowship, Hillel, Muslim Student Association, Pagan Mysticism Group, Quaker Concerns, and Unitarian Universalist Students. Quaker students represent eight percent of the student population.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Blacks Unifying Society (BUS), Native American Club, International Relations Club
