| Advice on Finding a Job/Internship | |
Getting a job or internship in Greensboro is not horribly difficult, although if you are looking for pay and not credit, you may end up in retail. Internships for credit are available in all fields, and there are pre-existing relationships through the college with many local companies. Check the classifieds of the News & Record either on-line or in the paper, as well as the classifieds and internship notebooks in the Career Center. Use the Career and Community Learning Center and your advisors as much as needed. They can both be extremely helpful in getting you the type of internship you want. Go to the career fairs to find out about possible locations that might interest you, even if only for future reference. Get an on-campus job if possible. It may not pay much money, but most departments are more understanding of student issues and schedules. Plus, it is easier to work in-between classes and for a fewer number of hours a week. If you are looking to work more than 20 hours a week, you may need to find a part-time job. You can volunteer with Project Community (336) 316-2452 and get experience, but not necessarily paid experience. Make sure to get any internship you decided on pre-approved for credit by your academic department. Retroactively getting credit for your major can be very difficult if you did not do the appropriate paperwork throughout your time at the internship.
