Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Some call Greensboro a college town, but others insist that it’s anything but. It really depends on how much time you spend at the local college hangouts, such as the trendy and popular Tate Street. There is a great arts and culture scene, but you have to actually get off campus and venture into other parts of the city to find it. Many students are quite satisfied with the numerous activities on campus and stay absorbed in the “Guilford Bubble.” The other colleges in the area also have events that are open to both Guilford students and the public such as speakers, theater performances, and art galleries. Other colleges and universities in Greensboro include: Bennett College (all women), University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), Greensboro College, NC Agricultural and Technical State University College (A&T), and Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC). The surrounding Triad and Triangle area are interesting destinations for day trips or visits to friends at other large colleges such as Duke, Wake Forest, Chapel Hill or Elon. There is a thriving local music scene that extends throughout the Triad and the Triangle. There are local concerts every weekend somewhere in Greensboro. Big names and underground performers alike come through the area often, if not in Greensboro, then within a drivable distance. Music patrons carpool and even “bikepool” to shows around town. Check out Go Triad and other local publications for concert calendars and other local events.

Greensboro isn’t the biggest of cities, but there are enough strip mall urban sprawl centers (Wendover, Four Seasons Mall) mixed in with neat local stores (College Hill, downtown) that you can get close to anything you want. There’s a lot to do in Greensboro, but you have to be willing to get off your butt and look.

Atmosphere of Community

Guilford is located in the city of Greensboro. Greensboro is a bustling city. There are lots of opportunities for students to leave campus and get involved. A number of students get involved with issues off campus especially issues of activism.

For those who are not interested in activism or like to do other things besides activism there are a number of festivals in Greensboro and on campus that celebrate different cultures and diversity. Besides the festivals there are a number of service based learning, volunteering sights which provide a wonderful way to get to know your community and give back to it.

There Aren't Many Activities

There are a few colleges in this area, but not enough recreational activities available for college students, or young adults. A lot of the students in my college often go to parties during the weekends and engage in illegal or unsafe activities, like underage drinking. Of course, there are things to do around here, like going to the movies and indoor ice skating. But it's repetitive and gets boring. For freshmen students that come from another state, like myself, it is very fun and exciting to go to places like these with your new friends, but after a semester or two, it gets boring.

Also, everything in the city is far away from each other, and far from campus. You either have to own a car, or be very patient and take the bus.
