Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Nightlife is a mixed bag—or perhaps a “grab bag”—in Greensboro. While the dance club scene is certainly lacking, the live music scene flourishes. There is a consistent group of devotees for most genres, and some appreciate all music that arises out of North Carolina. You may realize after a couple shows that you recognize some of those indie rockers from the last show, although it all tends to blend together after late nights in dark crowded venues. Most shows are under $10 or even free, so you can enjoy a cheap night out if you don’t drink too much. Many Guilford students tell tales of sketchy incidents in clubs and bars, so if you are going out somewhere for the first time, be careful and go with others if possible. The bars are certainly more social than clubs, but theyare better suited for those who feel the need to drink in public. Meanwhile, you can keep yourself fairly entertained by socializing on campus. Parties on campus are very personable and small in comparison to large university frat parties. Students shouldn’t feel restricted from going to parties, even if they are uninvited. Guilford students rarely seem to be bothered by class differences.

Serendipity is the big party and entertainment weekend at Guilford in the spring. When the drinking age was 18, back when Serendipity began, the school used to buy mountains of kegs for the students. Although Serendipity is still a college-funded event, alas, there is no longer any school-sponsored drinking. There is a carnival full of games, inflated things, picnics, dances, parties, games, concerts, a huge bonfire, and general revelry all around campus. People are entranced and delighted all weekend in many different ways. It is a wonderful tradition that you may just have to experience for yourself.

Nightlife

On campus parties make you want to shoot yourself in the mouth they are so bad. Unless you live in an apartment and are throwing the party with your friends do not expect to have fun. They are so so small and cramped with either no music or dubstep. Off campus parties are generally better but even those are questionable. And having a car is necessary. A local club sometimes will have pretty good concerts but other than that it is not worth it to hit up.

There’s a Gender Bender where the campus can switch gender roles and show up to dance and embrace their sexuality. During the spring, there is a Masquerade Ball promoted by the school’s Yachting Club. At the end of the school year, there is a great big weekend event known as Serendipity, which is filled with music, a blow up carnival, free T-shirts, and lots of other fun events.

Organization Parties

There are rarely official dorm parties, but they do happen with great security measures and pre-planning by Hall Councils. Others include: Serendipity, Yachting Club’s Masquerade Ball, Pride’s Coming Out Ball and Gender Bender. Union events include dances (formal and not) and parties. Serendipity is also arranged mostly by Student Union.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

M’Coul’s Public House

Another new favorite of Guilford students, this pub serves a variety of food by day and turns into a pleasant escape at night. They have a large selection of beers and a patio on which to enjoy them. Cover: $5

110 W. McGee St.

Keegan’s Pub & Grill

Another local favorite of college students and townies alike. Guinness is the drink of choice at this traditional Celtic pub. Specials vary, and pub food is also available. Cover: $8 for special nights. Hours: Monday–Saturday 11 a.m.–2 a.m., Sunday 12 p.m.–12 a.m.

2506 Battleground Ave.

(336) 288-0100

Red Oak Brew Pub

Right across the street from campus, Red Oak has become a place to celebrate for Guilford students. Exhausted upperclassmen can be found here after exams or mid-terms taking a bit of time to de-stress. Red Oak’s on-site brewery produces many different kinds of beer, including some dark brews. Although it might be a bit more expensive than picking up a six pack, Red Oak’s high quality makes up for the difference. The atmosphere is dark and personal, allowing groups to be a bit loud and still have privacy. Cover: None

Natty Greene’s

Located in a rather large older building downtown and is itself also a local brewery. There is a large patio area for chatting with friends outside on warm spring or early fall nights. It is within walking distance from the Green Bean, N’Club, Sky Bar and Much as well as several neat downtown shops. Cover: $5 on weekends. Dining Hours: Daily 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Bar Hours: Monday–Saturday, 11 a.m.–2 a.m., Sunday 11 a.m.–12 a.m.

345 S Elm St.

(336) 274-1373

JP Looneys

Some highly recommend JP’s, while others can’t stand it. It really depends on the crowd on a particular night, as well as personal taste. This is much more like a typical sports bar than a club. It is generally crowded and loud. Cover: None. Hours: Monday–Saturday 11 a.m.–2 a.m., Sunday 11:30 a.m.–2 a.m.

3021 Spring Garden St.

(336) 852-1331

Brixx

Guilford students tend to migrate to Brixx on Thursday nights. They will tell you this is for the import beer special. But the big attraction is free pizza on Thursdays—expect crowds and a decent wait. Brixx has a large selection of local and imported beers a bit above the typical ones you find on tap. Cover: $3

Amigos

Students are fond of Amigos for not only the food, but the decent selection of cheap drinks. Cover: None

Green Bean

A great evening place to relax and socialize with your friends. Thursdays have half-off coffee, as well as wine and beer. They have a decent, and not too expensive, selection of wines and beers to sip while your under-21 friends gingerly sip their lattes. Cover: None

College Hill Sundries

A small little hole-in-the-wall place that attracts the local neighborhood folk. They host an occasional open-mic and local live music nights. Cover: None

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

You can go to sleep (nah, just kidding); go to 18 and over shows: Most of the local shows are 18+. Be prepared to get big black Xs on your hands, though; have fun and socialize at not-so-legal “social gatherings” on campus; several of the clubs are 18 and over. Translation: you can dance, but you can’t drink; the Green Bean has no age requirements and your older, legal friends can drink there with you and share a slice of cheesecake. How romantic.
