Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There’s a notable selection of delicious food off campus, no matter what your fancy (or whether you’re looking for fancy or not). Even with traffic, most types of cuisine are less than 20 minutes away, and quite a few are within walking or biking distance. There is a diverse variety of local spots to choose from, as well as almost any restaurant chain you can think of about a 10-minute drive away in either Wendover or Battleground. The Quaker Village, located across West Friendly Avenue at the front of the campus is home to many Guilford students’ favorites, such as Jam’s Deli with their huge sandwiches and burgers. There’s homestyle pizza at Elizabeth’s Pizza (with a location in Quaker Village). Delivery services abound. Through trial and error, many have discovered the best Chinese delivery is King House. There are several authentic Mexican restaurants near by, including Amigos.
Vegetarian and vegan folks adore both the Quaker Center’s Pita Works and Tate Street’s Boba House. For the carnivores, there’s juicy steak that goes well with dark, fresh-brewed beer at Red Oak, the local brewery. There are other ethnic options readily available all over town, including Japanese, Greek and additional Mexican restaurants. Tate Street, located near the campus of UNCG, is another culinary hotspot and home to many shops, music, and youth culture. As for other fast food, the best is the Triad favorite, Cook Out! It has locations across the city, but the closest are either Battleground or High Point Road The drive-thru is open till either 2 a.m. or 4 a.m. There are several other late night diners where you’ll likely run into other GuilCo insomniacs. Such places are Jake’s on Wendover, right next to another favorite, the Waffle House. Another competitor for the night crowd is Jan’s House, also open 24 hours.

Fantastic

I'm a big lover of Asian food. With the Asian superstore a few streets away, there are dozens of very authentic places to go to. I actually found a Filipino and Korean restaurant, which are wonderful.

Other than that, there are some good pubs in downtown Greensboro, including a few upper scale places. And then there are bakeries!, cafes, and then the college staples scattered around Guilford College...

Jimmy Johns, Elizabeth's Pizza (opened rather late!, but there's another open until 3am near downtown Greensboro), jazz bars, starbucks, Mello Mushroom, McDonalds & Chik-fil-a in walkind distance, cook out, Chilis, Subways, Donut World, etc.

Actually a whole lot of choices, come to think of it. The people who complain need to get out more.

Quaker Village and Surroundings

There is a great option of off campus dining. There are a lot of fast food restaurants like Mc. Donald's, Hardees and Chik Fil A. There is also Harris Teeter which is a grocery store and its easy to sign up for the discount card. They have a lot of deals every week. Carolina's Diner is our school's hot spot. Everyone goes there. They have some of the best food I've tasted. In addition to their good food they offer student discounts if you show your college ID. Starbucks is also there and so is Boston Market. There are at least 2 chinese food places that are affordable and know the campus so its easy for delivery. They too offer discounts if you show your ID. There is another place called Jimmy John's they have great fresh subs and are pretty fast on delivery. Sometimes these stores don't have signs about the student discounts so you have to ask. Everyone's very friendly so don't be embarrassed.

Facts

Did You Know?
  • You can walk from campus to many places to eat in the Quaker Village area.
  • You can find something to eat cheap for breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Harris Teeter.
  • You can get organic groceries at Harris Teeter, but Fresh Market specializes in only natural products.
  • If you are going to get delivery, pickings become slim after 10 p.m. However, there's plenty to order early evening for dinner or weekend nights.
  • There are normally lots of flyers and discounts available at the Info Desk or in front of your door if you live in the apartments. Look for student discounts with delivery on menus. Keep a look out for flyers on the post boards, as well.
  • At Cook Out, you can combine any of their shake flavors to make something new and different.
  • North Carolina barbecue is very different from other BBQ around the country. There are even particular Eastern and Western North Carolinian ways of preparing it, including finely shredding the meat. It is an experience any non-vegetarian living in NC should have and enjoy. Experiment with various backcountry restaurants and different style and sauces, and you'll be included in a favorite regional pastime.
