Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For a mid-size city, the public transportation in Greensboro is not as convenient as one might expect. The bus system (GTA) is available for use, but few students take advantage of the routes. The buses seem to keep their own schedules and not necessarily the ones posted. Also, if you miss the bus, you might as well give yourself an additional 30-minute to an hour wait before the one you need passes you by again. A bus stop is located on the edge of campus on Friendly Avenue. However, to get anywhere on the night buses, the walk is a bit further—about five minutes down Friendly Avenue, and to a seemingly random spot on Muirs Chapel. Tickets are only $1, and long-term passes can be bought from the driver. There are routes to Tate Street, the Four Seasons Mall, and the nearby Friendly Shopping Center that do not involve transfers. Be early and expect to possibly stay late when it comes to bus-stop pickup times. Otherwise, a car is a much better option.

However, those who have cars are often willing to share or carpool to events downtown, to the grocery store, or to Wendover Avenue. For getting out of town, a small airport is close by. The parking lot has parking meters, so remember to bring some quarters if you plan on parking for a while. Many find that flights are sometimes cheaper out of Raleigh-Durham, which is about an hour-and-a-half away. Amtrak is a great way to ship home the stuff you couldn’t fit in the car at the end of the year. Otherwise, East Coast residents carpool for breaks instead of flying. The best way to find a ride is to search for your state or city in Lotus Notes, and then call around to see if anyone is driving home. Most people are open to this idea especially if you are going to help out with gas money or snacks.

We used to have a transportation system called the Heat Bus, but it became to expensive to keep. However, freshmen, as well as the other students on campus, can have cars for only $70 the whole entire year (which is nothing). So if students can't find a friend with a car, cabs are another possibility for students. Although I have not used a cab yet, I have heard they are not very expensive, maybe a $16 ride for about 10-15 minute drive down to the Friendly Center or the PTI Airport.
