College Prowler Take
Though the Gustie Rouser is a staple during first-year orientation and for those with excessive amounts of school spirit, the majority of Gustie athletic fans are calm, cool, and have no idea what is going on when part of the crowd starts fervently clapping and chanting. Though the majority of varsity events have sparse crowds, the hockey rink and basketball arena are guaranteed to be packed to capacity no matter how good, bad, or ugly the season is going. Hockey is a way of life in Minnesota, so a hockey game is nothing short of a cultural experience where the words “overzealous parents” and “trash-talking fans” take on a whole new meaning. The majority of varsity athletics at Gustavus have solid seasons and are free to students with the exception of games that go beyond the regular season, so it’s a cheap way to spend a weekend evening, or the perfect excuse to stop studying on a weekday. The men’s and women’s tennis teams consistently rank in the top of the Division III standings, and the fancy tennis bubble is a great place to check out a match. Do yourself a favor and check out a sporting event by one of the not-so-popular teams: women’s gymnastics and the men’s and women’s swim teams consistently provide nail-biting action, and you can usually nab a front-row spot. Want to get involved in some of the action? The IM program at Gustavus is extensive and caters to students of all skills levels.

Varsity sports aren’t huge on campus, but a lot of students like to attend games with their friends for fun or as a nice, long study break. Football games are fun to attend, although the Gusties aren’t exactly known for their winning record. Hockey games are also popular. The biggest IM sport on campus occurs during January term, when dozens of broomball teams compete in the annual competition. It’s very easy to sign up; all you have to do is get enough friends together and show up. |

The sports are what you make it: if you put the time and effort in, they can be rewarding, and there are crowds that support your team of choice. The IM sports are a huge hit; I think this is because of the wide array of choices that can appeal to everyone. |

Gustavus always seems to do well in a number of sports—men’s and women’s basketball, track, and swimming come to mind, and I’m sure there are more. The football team isn’t world-renowned, but going to Saturday afternoon games is a blast. IM sports go on throughout the year, so there is always something and someone to play. |

Basketball and football are the most supported sports on campus. People also love to go and watch IM basketball. |
