College Prowler Take

Grow to love the Evelyn Young Dining Room—it’s the only option you have on your meal plan! Though the Courtyard Café caters to the coffee and pastry crowd (don’t have any shame in rushing to get the gingerbread cookies—they are to die for!), the Market Place (otherwise known as the Caf) will have to satisfy the rest of your hunger pangs. The food itself is not bad for being a school cafeteria. Centrally located in the Campus Center, and open every day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., there is never any reason to miss a meal. Students can choose from a variety of options, including pizza, pasta, and french fries, as well as a plentiful salad bar, sandwich line, make-your-own-burrito line, and plenty of veggie-friendly choices. Make sure to get a frost-your-own cookie on each of the holidays. The frosting color changes to fit the festivities, but they’re definitely tasty all year long. And you’ll be doing yourself a favor to memorize the pizzeria’s number: they make stellar cheese bread that can be ordered for pickup anytime the Market Place is open.

The Market Place is set up differently than a lot of schools’ dining options. There is no “flex” plan; rather, each item has a set price, and you pay for what you buy. There are three meal plan options, which change according to how much money you want to spend on food. A good deal for the small eaters, but it’s a shoplifter’s paradise for those with larger appetite who don’t want to spend all their money before the month is half over. Students also have the option to shop for basic groceries in the Market Place and use their meal plan money for the purchases. But upperclassmen living without a meal plan, be warned: the prices are fine for those who dine with a meal plan, but they’re astronomically high for someone paying out of pocket.

The food on campus gets rave reviews from visitors—as I enter my senior year, I’m thankful that I will be living off-campus so I won’t be forced to eat there for three meals a day. I think that it becomes boring after a while, but I would say that the quality of the food is very high, even if there isn’t the most variety.

Well, the one dining hall we have is good. There is a lot of variety, and usually the food is good. Of course, anything gets old, though, and the Caf starts to suck. If you get creative, though, you can last through your senior year.

The food is wonderful. There is just one cafeteria that has food ranging from pasta, burgers, sandwiches, rotisserie chicken, fried rice, egg rolls, a salad bar, omelets, and waffles. Plus, you can always order a pizza for take out and a birthday cake from the cafeteria and just charge it to your student account.

Most of the food is the same, which makes it repetitive after a while. One thing that is nice is that you are only charged for what you buy, instead of having so many meals a week. Some good things are the pizzeria and the bakery.

The Market Place in the Johnson...

The Market Place in the Johnson Student Union is excellent. There is a great selection of food from at least 10 different food counters (including a grill, a pizzeria, a wok, and a vegetarian line). The food is quite good, and there is always something new to try. One word of advice: don’t wait too late in the evening to grab your dinner; otherwise, you’ll be left with a choice of pizza, egg rolls, or a sandwich.
