Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Though the College toughened its alcohol policy, making it less appealing for underage students to drink on campus for fear of fines, counseling classes, and a worse housing priority number for the next school year, drinking still remains the primary weekend social activity. Even so, the campus also has a "limited immunity" policy regarding minors’ alcohol consumption. If an underage student needs help due to excessive alcohol consumption, the student will not be punished if they (or a friend) call for help. While Safety and Security does patrol dorms and will ticket students if they are being loud and obnoxious, they will not typically seek out students to punish unless there have been repeated complaints. In actuality, more students commonly complain about parking tickets they acquire than being busted for doing anything illegal.

Collegiate Fellows can also ticket students for benign offenses like having refrigerators outside of the accepted dimensions or having candles and incense in dorm rooms. As a minor, don’t even try to keep alcohol containers in your room. With Res Life checking rooms during campus holidays, underagers can’t even have alcohol paraphernalia without the risk of getting in trouble. The Campus Judicial Board, which has student representatives, will hear cases brought before them, but this is only in extreme circumstances or because of multiple offenses, and students are usually given the benefit of the doubt, depending on the circumstances. The bottom line remains that when caught, the punishment can be severe, but if you’re careful and respectful, you can most likely make it through your four years at Gustavus without too many run-ins that result in punishment.

Strictness and some Stupidity

A lot of the strictness on campus comes from who your CF (Collegiate Fellow, aka, RA) is, and how much common sense you have. Some CF's are out to bust anybody they think is drinking, and won't hesitate to call Campus Safety. Other CF's rely on common sense. If you're not being disruptive or destructive, they won't bother you. There are different levels of punishment, the lowest being a $25 fine and a meeting with Residential Life. The highest being up to a $300 fine, eviction, and referral to Director of Alcohol and Drug Education, as well as possible referral to the Student Conduct Board. One good thing, the college has a Medical Amnesty Act, basically saying that if you and your friends are drinking, and one your friends gets into a serious medical situation, you won't get into trouble by reporting it and getting your friend help.

Some Say We're Strict, Others Don't

When you're a freshman, they want to make sure we know the rules. The CF's (collegiate fellows) give out yellow cards to those they find under the influence, but that's pretty much only in the freshman dorms. Gustavus sponsors the "Gus Bus", a small bus that drives all over campus and into town to the various areas of houses rented by college students so that we aren't driving and putting ourselves and others at risk.

Underage Drinking and Zero-Tolerance Hate Acts

The school tries very hard to educate the student body and community if any of these situations ever occur. For example, if GLBT students were threatened, the president would immediately take action, emailing and awaring the campus of such inappropriate activities. Also, they would usually hold discussions. However, usually not as many participants would show up to share their thoughts and feelings on the issue.
