Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students are familiar with stories of "CFs from Hell," hiding from Campus Safety, and the popular noise violation. That being said, most students have few qualms with Gustavus' discipline policies. Gustavus is a lenient, flexible, and understanding school in regards to "strictness." Its basic concern is the safety of students. This means that while students can drink, they must follow Gustavus' consumption guidelines. If they are underage and overdrink with their underage friends, they can call Campus Safety for help without worry that they or their friends will get drinking violations. For other offenses, never is the head resident's word final. Students have the ability to appeal to the Student Conduct Board made up of students and faculty who will hear the appeal and decide if punishment should follow. Students might not know how lucky they are when compared to other schools. Rarely will actual legal action be taken if students are found with marijuana or drinking underage.

Gustavus has trust and respect for its students, allowing them to partake in everything from the biannual streaking in the caf during finals to allocating soft punishments for first-time violators of the alcohol and marijuana policies. Gustavus believes students are happiest when they're allowed their freedom, but the school ensures their safety by enforcing policies when students' decisions threaten their well-being. The overall atmosphere is a trusting leniency with the main concern resting on protecting students from themselves and others.

Strictness and some Stupidity

A lot of the strictness on campus comes from who your CF (Collegiate Fellow, aka, RA) is, and how much common sense you have. Some CF's are out to bust anybody they think is drinking, and won't hesitate to call Campus Safety. Other CF's rely on common sense. If you're not being disruptive or destructive, they won't bother you. There are different levels of punishment, the lowest being a $25 fine and a meeting with Residential Life. The highest being up to a $300 fine, eviction, and referral to Director of Alcohol and Drug Education, as well as possible referral to the Student Conduct Board. One good thing, the college has a Medical Amnesty Act, basically saying that if you and your friends are drinking, and one your friends gets into a serious medical situation, you won't get into trouble by reporting it and getting your friend help.

Some Say We're Strict, Others Don't

When you're a freshman, they want to make sure we know the rules. The CF's (collegiate fellows) give out yellow cards to those they find under the influence, but that's pretty much only in the freshman dorms. Gustavus sponsors the "Gus Bus", a small bus that drives all over campus and into town to the various areas of houses rented by college students so that we aren't driving and putting ourselves and others at risk.

Underage Drinking and Zero-Tolerance Hate Acts

The school tries very hard to educate the student body and community if any of these situations ever occur. For example, if GLBT students were threatened, the president would immediately take action, emailing and awaring the campus of such inappropriate activities. Also, they would usually hold discussions. However, usually not as many participants would show up to share their thoughts and feelings on the issue.
