College Prowler Take
Though a personal computer is highly desirable to the average college student for e-mail, downloading, instant messaging, and Facebooking, students do not need their own computers to survive (though finding an open computer in the library on a Sunday evening is next to impossible). Computers are available in the Campus Center for students to quickly check their e-mail, and there are computer labs in every dorm on campus, as well as in many academic buildings. While the majority of campus is wired to PCs, several of the labs are equipped with up-to-date Macintosh computers. Computer labs are open to all students. Black-and-white printing is also free, but don’t even try to abuse the color printer in Olin Hall by printing off fun pictures from your rendezvous the weekend before—the lab assistants will give you an earful, and you'll be billed for it.
Perhaps the most frustrating part of the technology on campus is Computer Helpline. Though open everyday for phone support, room calls are only available for first-years upon move-in, and Thursdays are the only day that students can bring in their machines to be looked at. Likewise, the campus-wide network can go down occasionally, causing quite a large panic, and making it a hassle to communicate in our increasingly technology-dependent society. While most of the staff is highly competent and helpful, you are better off finding a tech-savvy friend to help you with computer problems, unless you have fantastic patience.

The computer network is a working wonder. Coming to Gustavus and not having much experience with computers, the IT people made it very easy to do what you needed to do at any computer on campus. But I would recommend bringing your own computer to make storing information and personal online transactions a little safer. |

As a first-year student, I did not have my own computer. The computer lab in my dorm was large, and I could always find an open workstation. |

I think in my whole time at Gustavus I knew only two people who didn’t have a computer. The labs are pretty open in the dorms; however, the library and Olin labs fill up, especially at night. |

The PCs become victim to a number of on-campus viruses, and the tech offices are slow on getting everything fixed. Tech workers can be very rude and very unhelpful at times. The computer network comes and goes with its efficiency. |

Most students do bring their own...
Most students do bring their own computers but utlilize labs, as well—especially for printing. Labs are widely available, with limitations during peak hours (finals and registration), in every academic building and residence hall on campus. Scanners, color printers, and quality Macintosh computers are very limited, though. |

Did You Know?
Since students must pay for cable on campus, the school started a program called GusTV. You get the major network channels for free on your computer, or you can get a transmitter to hook up your TV to the network. So you know your tuition dollars are going for something.
