Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Recreational drugs exist at Gustavus, but in order to find them, you have to actively seek them out, and it is a juicy piece of gossip when anyone is picked up for a drug offense other than alcohol. While "hard drugs" have rarely made their presence known, marijuana can be popular, and alcohol is the most commonly abused substance, much like at any college campus across the United States. Though the school is still a "wet campus" (students of age are allowed to have alcohol in their rooms), the College's alcohol policy aims to discourage minors from drinking. However, some students still receive minors (more often off campus than on campus) before they turn 21. Binge drinking is the biggest drug-related problem on campus, with the occasional student becoming far too intoxicated on a weekend night and being sent to detox. Consuming alcohol at Gustavus is widely popular, but those who choose to stay dry are hardly alienated. The College provides "substance-free housing" to even create a community among those who choose not to drink.

Though students do not have to drink on the weekends to fit in, the majority quickly realizes that alcohol is a part of the community and that some social events involve students consuming alcohol. The College's approach seems more about believing in the maturity among students when using alcohol and believes that those of age should have the right to consume in the privacy of their rooms or apartments. Yet, any student who blows a 0.2 or more on a Breathalyzer test will be sent to the regional detox center because of Gustavus' safe drinking policy. The College also provides (and requires of incoming first-year students) alcohol education programs to help teach students healthy drinking habits. Gustavus' drug and alcohol policy is far from strict, and getting caught by Campus Safety is much preferable than that of the St. Peter Police.

Drug and Alcohol Visisbility

Our school stresses an alcohol safe and free policy very well, also drug policy. Though there is still a good range of people who partake in these activities, I would say overall we do a good job of keeping the campus in control.

Surprisingly Understanding Campus Safety

As long as you're not blatantly drunk/high, the campus safety and collegiate fellows (similar to a residential adviser) is understanding, even for those underage. Be safe, be smart, and you will enjoy the drinking scene at Gustavus. Very little to no peer pressure.

Drugs in St. Peter?

The drug scene is very minimal, or at least it's very well hidden. I haven't heard of any instance of a student doing drugs harder than marijuana. There really isn't much of a drug seen, but many Gusties like to let loose and drink on the weekends. With that said, there is not much peer pressuring to drink.
