College Prowler Take
Recreational drugs exist at Gustavus, but in order to find them, you have to actively seek them out. Though some students are known to sell, it is not a prominent part of the culture of Gustavus, and it is a juicy piece of gossip when anyone is picked up for a drug offense other than alcohol. While “hard drugs” have not made their presence known, alcohol is a commonly abused substance, much like any college campus across the U.S. Though the school is still a “wet campus” (students of age are allowed to have alcohol in their rooms) the College has toughened alcohol policies to discourage minors from underage drinking, even though a fair number of students still receive minors before they turn 21. Binge drinking is the biggest drug-related problem on campus, with the many students becoming far too intoxicated on a weekend night. Consuming alcohol within reason doesn’t seem to be the popular mindset around campus. Though students do not have to drink on the weekends to fit in, the majority quickly realize that alcohol is a part of the community and that most social events involve students wishing to consume. Students who blow a 0.2 or more on a breathalizer test will be sent to the Regional Detox Center in New Ulm, about 30 minutes away. This center has become filled on weekends when there are several parties being hosted at once.

Um, some freshman twins got busted selling meth to an undercover cop on campus in the spring of 2004. And people smoke pot. |

The drug scene, if it does exist, goes pretty much unseen. Marijuana is, for sure, used amongst the students—and possibly some of the professors, too. |
