College Prowler Take

After suffering a massive F5 tornado in 1998, most of the campus was leveled and had to be rebuilt, pre-empting campus conversations as being either “pre-tornado” or “post-tornado.” Though the tornado devastated the campus, it gave the College a reason to become more technologically advanced and to improve facilities that had been wearing down. As a result, many of the buildings are about a decade old and are equipped with new amenities, such as the College’s dining area. The Lund Center did an overhaul of the workout facilities, which had previously been laughable. Students are now able to work out in a state-of-the-art gym with dozens of cardio machines, weights, and even TVs to pass the time.

The Campus Center and Student Union and the library (connected via skyway) seem to be the central hubs of action on campus. Though not utilized to its full capacity, the Dive, which used to be the old swimming pool, has space for students to play foosball, watch TV on leather couches, and congregate with study groups. Academic buildings are sufficient, though certainly not glamorous. Study areas need the most improvement, with few quiet spots outside of the library. Library study rooms are also sparse, and those that are open cater to small groups, offering cell-like rooms with no windows. The library is often a busy place, with students studying, meeting for group projects, or to taking quick naps between classes. The first and second floors are where students meet one another, while the third floor is the “quiet zone” (and a bit eerie sometimes).

The areas on campus I think need the greatest renovation are the library and dorm study rooms throughout the campus. The study lounges are outdated, uncomfortable, and dreary. The same goes for the library. Students do take full advantage of the many quiet places to study on campus. I only wish they were more pleasant, as I have spent so much time there!

They are quite nice, improvements are often made, and student input is heeded rather often, actually.

I love the facilities here. The sports complex is up-to-date and large—there is always space to grab a treadmill or play a game of racquetball between classes. The Campus Center is quite new, too (thanks to the tornado), and it is a hub of social activity.

The Lund Center has vastly improved the cardiovascular and weight machine areas. Other thanimprovements initiated by the Student Senate and required after the tornado in 1998, everything is ‘okay’—nothing spectacular, nothing too bad. Our pool is beautiful, though!
