Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The advantages and disadvantages to life in a Greek organization are visible not only to those within the organizations, but also to the College community over the past few years. The administration has been strict about Greek rush, with policies that threaten to suspend any organization that hazes their pledges (this came after the College garnered national attention for having to suspend rush activities). Being a Greek is not essential to fitting in and making friends at Gustavus, though it certainly doesn’t hurt anyone who wants to make new friends in new circles.

Though the Greeks do throw the best parties on campus, being a Greek at Gustavus also means that you have to love community service. The Inter-Greek Senate requires each organization to participate and host a certain number of events each semester. Included in this are community service and social awareness events such as silent auctions to fund play therapy for children, breast cancer and suicide awareness, and activities within the St. Peter community such as “painting the town” for those that cannot afford to repair their homes. The visible role that Greeks play within both the campus and local community make them beneficial, despite the drama that comes each year during “pledging” (the official term for rush at Gustavus now).

Greek Life at Gustavus

Greek Life is somewhat different at Gustavus from other schools. Although you can join a fraternity or sorority, you can't join until your sophomore year and there are no designated houses for fraternities and sororities which I think is nice. I like that they are not so heavily involved in campus life, because I don't feel pressure to join them or weird if I'm not a part of them

Greeks Blend in

Gustavus students are not allowed to rush until their sophomore year. This gives the students a chance to get to know the Greek system and get to know the students particiating in Greek Life. Students accepted into the Greek Life do not live together and their main purpose is to volunteer for the community and, of course, party and have fun.

Image and Philanthropy

The image of greek life at Gustavus is very positive. Although stereotypes of greek life taken from the media definitely linger here at Gustavus, the greek organizations do offer many opportunities to give back to causes they deem of utter importance. For example, Epsilon Pi Alpha is a fraternity that focuses heavily on bettering the lifestyle and equipment for type 1 diabetics. Each year, Insulindependence (an non-profit for bettering the lives of type 1 diabetics) helps co-sponsor a triatholan held by the Eppies. This is just one example of the positivity the Greeks on campus emulate.

Did You Know?

Due to a past hazing controversy, Gustavus no longer holds an official “Greek rush” period. Rush and pre-rush are now known as “recruitment” and “pledging,” respectively. Also, unlike most schools which make rush a semester-long process, “pledging” at Gustavus is not permitted to last more than two weeks.
