Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Gustavus' athletic reputation adds to the number of trim and athletic students, and helps create a pool of physically appealing men and women. Just eating lunch in the caf will show the density of good-looking people. However, the athletic bodies come with athletic social strata, and they tend to only date within the ranks. If you're looking for the "regular" type, Gustavus is filled with mostly white Minnesotan kids who are friendly enough to start a relationship with anyone they think interesting (both socially and physically). Or some don't want a relationship and are simply looking to get laid on a Saturday night. Either way, it's not unusual at Gustavus (or at any college) to encounter these two relationship approaches. What is more unique, rather, is seeing the person you were grinding with last night in the library the next morning or sitting next to him or her in class on Monday. Gustavus' size makes consequences of the quick hookup a little more awkward by increasing the chances of you bumping into that special person.

The social scene ranges from buxom beauties to shy hipsters, with the majority being playful and appealing. In your dorm, you'll have a few jaw-droppers, some freshly powdered blonds, and a couple "mehs." Whatever you're looking for, you can count on it being at Gustavus, where the school's relaxed and liberal atmosphere allows for both playful and serious relationships.

Strong Sense of Community at GAC

Gustavus feels like home for all of it's students. College is the place to be yourself, and the student body is accepting of whoever "yourself" is. Community is one of the 5 values of Gustavus, and I feel like it's the reason many of the students decided to come here.

Eh Whatever They Want

We're a typical college that allows people to wear what they want. Here the girls are beautiful and the for the most part boys are pretty hot.

Facts

Social Scene

While many students may still be intimidated by an apparent "popularity" status that many students seem to hold, there is very little hierarchy with the social scene at Gustavus. While some groups remain exclusive, rarely are parties ever closed to the general public, with the exception of some parties that occur during the Greek pledging period. The weekend social scene is the perfect opportunity to meet students that you wouldn't necessarily know otherwise: If you really want to go to that kegger/house party/wine tasting/on-campus-sober-fun event, show up, pay your cover charge if necessary, and have a good time!

Hookups or Relationships?

Hookups seem to be more prevalent on campus—though it seems that girls are more in the market for a relationship, while the guys seem to be more inclined to date around. However, come your senior year, you will begin to wonder how you know so many people that are engaged.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Being a small school, it is advantageous that Gusties will see each other around campus nearly everyday. The places to meet boys and/or girls on campus are in classes, in the residence halls, or in one of the many different activities that you can involve yourself in on campus. There is never any need to stress over the good-looking girl that sits behind you and is “out of your league”; you are probably involved in another activity with her, as well, and if you’re not, it’s guaranteed that one of your friends will be. So take the chance, and ask her to be your lab partner, there’s a pretty high probability that she already knows your name.

Dress Code

Being a small residential college, it's the norm for students to show up to class in sweatpants. Some students take pride in their clothing, while most just want to be comfortable. Freshman girls usually adopt the sweatpants-in-UGG-boots-and-hair-in-ponytail look, while guys pick up the trend of a sweatshirt and jeans. As the weather turns cooler, everyone's North Face comes out and H&M sweaters pervade.
