There are few college campuses where the security officers have a good relationship with students. You’ll hear frequent complaints of security being unreasonable, “out to get” students, and always willing to dish out a ticket. With an ancient campus policy restricting members of the opposite sex in dorm rooms after 2 a.m., does Residential Life even expect rules like these to be enforced? Regardless of what many students will say, Safety and Security at Gustavus is made up of reasonable individuals looking out for the best interest of the students. Are they ticket happy at times? Certainly. Everyone has gotten more than one undeserved parking ticket. But when it comes to student safety, there is no messing with these guys and gals: with the school toughening alcohol policies, they actually enforce the rules.

It is disappointing that officers tool around in gas guzzling SUVs when all they seem to do is peruse parking lots looking for students who failed to park in the designated area. The College could certainly improve Safety and Security; namely, by hiring more officers who can respond to situations where time is of the essence. Additionally, the school needs to place more lights around campus. Even with “blue lights” for students to push in case of an emergency, the paths around campus are dimly lit, and for students out walking in the wee hours of the morning, the scary shadows do not provide too much comfort.

Overall Gustavus has great safety and security measures on campus. At no point have I ever felt unsafe, and campus crime is really quite low. The majority of violations that are handed out our for underage drinking and parking, which are quite rare.

Safety and Security

Security is good on campus. Keys are required for all dorm buildings, there are regular patrols of Campus Safety officers, and they are very approachable

I Feel Safe

The only incident that has been bad that happened within my knowledge was last year. There were a few assaults. But to be honest. I feel really safe here! Everyone I have met it super nice and caring about others.
