College Prowler Take

Thank goodness that Mankato is just down the road; otherwise, students would expend their off-campus dining options within the first week of the school year. While St. Peter has many local establishments that offer delicious vittles (a milkshake at Ruttles, breakfast at Ooodles, ranch fries at Patrick’s, or a smoothie at River Rock), one of its small-town charms is the fact that there are fewer chain restaurants than what would normally be found in a larger city. The best food in St. Peter can’t be found on just any street corner.

Mankato, on the other hand, offers a welcome reprieve when you are craving something more. Mankato is stockpiled with chain restaurants, including college student favorites such as Chipotle and Noodles & Company. For those willing to seek out restaurants beyond the chains, there are a few unique spots: Yu’s offers excellent Chinese food (be sure to hit up the buffet on Saturday evenings), Bonito Guadalajara doles out fantastic Mexican cuisine, and Neighbor’s is the primo date locale (you even get free wine if you have to wait for a table). What both St. Peter and Mankato severely lack is variety, and after four years, students with ethnic tastebuds find themselves having to drive to the Twin Cities when they are hankering for food with flair.

Really, there isn’t much to choose...

Really, there isn’t much to choose from but three sit-down restaurants and the usual fast food, all of which have a wonderful grease-dominated menu and few selections for the vegetarian or vegan population.

Patrick’s has great food. The rest...

Patrick’s has great food. The rest of the places in town are so-so. But don’t forget about Ooodles. Any time of the day, the food is always good. Unfortunately, you have to drive to Mankato for any decent choice in dining. It can be quite an inconvenience if you don’t want to drive 20 minutes to eat.

St. Peter has a few fast food...

St. Peter has a few fast food joints, but nearby Mankato touts a number of restaurants, some of which are classier than you might think. Neighbor’s is a great place to impress a first date, and Bonito Guadalajara comes recommended by the Spanish department and is a great deal. The best kept secret, though, is Yu’s Chinese Cuisine, which has a lunch buffet and a great menu, too. You’ll probably run into savvy professors who have caught this gem long ago. You’ll eat here so much you’ll become friends with the owners; that is, if you can find it—and I’m not telling!

The best restaurants off campus...

The best restaurants off campus are definitely in Mankato and include B Dubs (Buffalo Wild Wings), Mexican Village, and Cold Stone.

Let’s just say thank God Mankato...

Let’s just say thank God Mankato is only 15 minutes away. The selection is very slim in St. Peter. With the exception of my favorite, Subway, there aren’t a lot of dining places to go, especially for the dating crowds. But with Mankato only a few miles away, it makes for an enjoyable ride into town, with all the major fast food restaurants and a few big name franchise restaurants.
