College Prowler Take
With over 90 percent of the student body enrolled as full-time students, Gustavus prides itself on being a close-knit and traditional community. The majority of upperclassmen students opt to live on campus in apartment-style housing and still enjoy the idea of not having to mow the lawn, shovel the snow, or pay for all their own utilities. The biggest hassles with being granted off-campus status come courtesy of Residential Life. Applying to live off campus is tricky since your randomly-generated priority number can either make or break your chances of getting off campus (don’t even bother thinking you can live off campus as a sophomore). In addition, not having a car means that you have to walk up Old Main Hill each day—a good workout, but certainly something to be dreaded in the middle of winter. Students who do live off campus sing both its praises and annoyances. While there are many perks to not having to deal with Residential Life and having your own space, downfalls of living off campus in St. Peter include overpriced rent based on demand over supply and few options outside of living in large houses with a number of friends—apartments in St. Peter are sparse and not the closest to campus. With the majority of your classmates living on campus and having the benefit of living in apartments while still being able to walk next door and knock on your friend’s door, you are better off just living on campus.

It is really not worth it, because...
It is really not worth it, because they rarely let sophomores off campus anyway, it costs an arm and a leg, and you are not on the meal plan, so it is more expensive. The St. Peter townsfolk don’t exactly like college students setting up house next to them, so neighbor relations can be a trial, too. My advice: stay on campus—it’s cheaper and less of a hassle. |

Off-campus housing is difficult to...
Off-campus housing is difficult to be granted permission for, a pain in the ass to deal with, and will become a part of your life soon enough after graduation. At Gustavus, there is no reason to go through all the hassles that off-campus housing requires. I lived off campus for a year and a half, and I’m moving back on campus for my final semester at Gustavus! |

Living off campus is the greatest...
Living off campus is the greatest experience. Not only do you have more freedom, but you learn a lot about responsibility. You have to pay rent, buy groceries, cook your own meals, and be able to pay utility bills on time. Unfortunately, administration doesn’t think living off campus is such a great experience, and they are trying to make the entire student body live on campus. |

It is kind of an unspoken rule...
It is kind of an unspoken rule that students stay on campus until junior year, at least. Housing in town is available, but I wouldn’t rush into getting a house until you know your roommates very well. Getting approved to live off campus can be an ordeal, too, so most students wait until their senior year to get a house or apartment off the Hill. |

Well, if you want to live off...
Well, if you want to live off campus, this isn’t the place for you. After the completion of the largest dorm facility on campus, I believe there is going to be little room to reside off campus. Luckily for me, my roommate petitioned to live off campus, and we lived two blocks from campus. It was the best thing we could’ve done. I had great landlords, good roommates, and it made college much more enjoyable. |
