College Prowler Take

Regardless of the times of frustration, stress, and anger, students always seem to firmly believe that Gustavus was the right choice for them, and they live and breathe the school and the campus traditions. As the often-repeated saying goes, you will become a Gustie for life. Students who enter Gustavus know many of the “downfalls” before they enroll: the small-town atmosphere, limited majors, and the social politics that will be involved by attending a college the size of many high schools. However, the benefits of the small school experience that come with Gustavus are experienced right away: small class sizes, personal attention from professors, and the ability to meet and befriend a number of fellow students. Students who stick through the four years at Gustavus come away with a changed outlook on themselves, life, and the world around them.

While Gustavus may lack many of the things that come with attending large schools, there are plenty of opportunities to make the four years something to treasure: activities are plentiful, the curriculum challenging, and the chance for self-exploration abounds. Any student who enters Gustavus has the ability to choose their own adventure. Challenge yourself, and do the unexpected. Gustavus offers the chance to step outside of your comfort zone; study abroad, become involved in an activity that you never thought you would be interested in, or declare a minor for something that you truly become passionate about. The four years on the Hill fly by quickly, and then the real world waits. Enjoy the community, warmth, and “small town bubble” while you still can. There simply is no college quite like it.

For a while, I wished I had gone somewhere else, but looking back on my four years now, it was alright. I wouldn’t know the people I know, and I wouldn’t be the person I am, if I hadn’t gone to GAC. I’m happy with who I am and what I’ve done. It sounds cheesy, but it’s the truth. You may like GAC or you may hate it, but if you hate it, you can always transfer.

At times, I wish I was closer to the Cities so I could see concerts and go to restaurants, but then I think of all my professor buddies and that regret goes away.

I felt that, as the time passed at Gustavus, the better it got. It started with me being worried about the cost of things, rather than what it was really worth to me. After my first year, I wished I were anywhere else. But over my next three years, I gained relationships that were more valuable than the tuition cost. College is what you make it, no matter where you end up. It just happens that Gustavus is the place I ended up, and looking back on it, I’m glad I didn’t pick any place else.

I loved my time at Gustavus. There was so much to do, both in and out of the classroom. College is a time for you to discover and create your identity, and Gustavus is a place that nurtures that. Professors encourage your success and act as wonderful mentors, and the community is a great place to be a part of. I wish I was back at Gustavus now that I’ve graduated!

I loved Gustavus. I loved the people I met and the experiences I had. I did not apply anywhere else, and I am proud of the decision I made. The only thing to look out for is that Gustavus is a small school of about 3,000 students and everyone knows everyone, so gossip travels pretty quickly.
