College Prowler Take
There are few college campuses where the security officers have a good relationship with students. You’ll hear frequent complaints of security being unreasonable, “out to get” students, and always willing to dish out a ticket. With an ancient campus policy restricting members of the opposite sex in dorm rooms after 2 a.m., does Residential Life even expect rules like these to be enforced? Regardless of what many students will say, Safety and Security at Gustavus is made up of reasonable individuals looking out for the best interest of the students. Are they ticket happy at times? Certainly. Everyone has gotten more than one undeserved parking ticket. But when it comes to student safety, there is no messing with these guys and gals: with the school toughening alcohol policies, they actually enforce the rules. It is disappointing that officers tool around in gas guzzling SUVs when all they seem to do is peruse parking lots looking for students who failed to park in the designated area. The College could certainly improve Safety and Security; namely, by hiring more officers who can respond to situations where time is of the essence. Additionally, the school needs to place more lights around campus. Even with “blue lights” for students to push in case of an emergency, the paths around campus are dimly lit, and for students out walking in the wee hours of the morning, the scary shadows do not provide too much comfort.

I have felt that, overall, the campus is safe and secure. It is however, lacking in its number of lights. When it is dark, you really recognize that the amount of lights is not where it should be. |

Safety and Security is a little overboard. They drive SUVs and, in my opinion, take it way too seriously. Although we did get away with borrowing two golf carts, and they couldn’t seem to catch us then! |

I have never felt unsafe on campus or in St. Peter. Even with the hospital in St. Peter, the only thing to be careful about is the drinking and party atmosphere. Drunken college students are their own worst enemies: bad decisions at parties, repercussions of binge drinking, and sexual assaults after parties are the only safety issues to consider at Gustavus or in St. Peter. |

Overall, I feel safe on campus....
Overall, I feel safe on campus. However, I feel there that there is room for improvement, policy-wise. Because Gustavus is a private college, it is not required to report sexual assaults that occur on campus. Due to Minnesota law, all public colleges must announce whenever a sexual assault occurs on campus. I feel that students believe they live inside a protective bubble, when in reality, we face the same crimes and challenges as any other colleges. I only wish that the school would take accountability for what occurs on its property by keeping the students informed. |

I always felt very safe, except for the parking tickets. They really liked to focus on those. |
