Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

One word: fantastic. It might sound overenthusiastic, but it’s true. The professors might be the number one reason students love this school. Professors will go out of their way to help a student with schoolwork, as long as they aren’t afraid to ask. Classes are hard, and the greatest professors are often the most demanding. They challenge students to think independently in the classroom, and it is very rare for a professor to only lecture. Discussions carry a lot of weight, even in math and science classes. Professors are accessible outside of the classroom as well, and happily talk to their students about what is happening in their lives beyond academics. Advisors call their students to talk about everything: majors, campus construction, and snow. Professors take interest in students’ lives and are exceedingly helpful for a multitude of worries.

Don’t misunderstand—there are a handful of professors that can make academic life horrid. Ones who grade your papers based on personal opinion, others who would rather be publishing their work, some refuse to give grades above a B, and the requisite few who never should have become a teacher. Yet it’s fairly easy to avoid those professors. Freshmen learn to listen to upperclassmen talk about their favorite and hated professors—and there are ways to get around a class with an undesirable professor. Our faculty is also renowned across the country, especially the government and economics departments. Major media sources look to our professors for an expert position on topics ranging from American history to Chinese paintings. We have access to a very learned group of people who have chosen to teach at a small school in the middle of New York for the contact they can have with their students.

Open Curriculum

I was attracted to Hamilton for its open curriculum, and I am not disappointed at all. Students are allowed to explore several different avenues of the liberal arts education, without worrying about taking required intro level courses in areas that do not interest them. It is exciting and interesting to select courses that you want to take, and be surrounded by people who actually want to be there.

Love It.

Great professors who are easy to befriend, though obviously not everyone will be at the same level of ease or tolerance. It's important to establish good relationships with your teachers here and I already feel that I can do that.
