Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The best thing Hamilton has to offer is the 21 meal plan. Students can come and go as they please. Between classes, you can grab a cup of coffee and still be able to come back an hour later for lunch. Soper Commons has made-to-order sushi and pasta bar on the weekdays. Other options include an omelet and waffle bar for breakfast, grilled chicken and hamburgers all day, and an ice cream station. During all hours of operation, the salad bar and sandwich bar are available from 10 a.m. until closing. In addition, Commons weekday snack time is a great option for students who miss lunch, get hungry between meals, or want to meet friends and professors over a quick bite to eat. Late-night breakfast at the Diner is one of the most popular meals for students. The Howard Diner serves as an after-hours meeting spot on the weekends. Students are often found dancing in the isle or singing from the ‘50s-style booths to the music blasting from the retro jukebox.

Despite glowing praise of the food, there are a few problems with the dining facilities. A Howard Diner dinner costs six dollars, and with that money, you are limited to a sandwich, fries, and a drink. Equivalency dollars are based on the time of day, which means you don’t get the same exchange value at breakfast and dinner. On the weekends, McEwen is closed, and that leaves Commons and the Diner as the only options. Not only is this an inconvenience to students living close to McEwen, but it makes other venues congested and overcrowded, particularly as Commons is the only eating area open for breakfast/brunch.

Commons Vs. Mcewen

Both dining halls on campus are very good, and offer students a lot of different options. As a vegan, I never am pressed to find something to eat. McEwen offers several vegetarian and vegan options, and is the more 'health conscious' of the two dining halls. Commons also serves great food, and features a regular salad bar, deli bar, sushi bar, pizza bar, and other staples that are vital to the college student diet. There is also the Howard Diner, which is a great place to go when you are craving something a little greasier, but still delicious!

Nothing Special, but More Than Adequate

It's not going to blow anyone away with its creativity, but they do a good enough job. The diner, especially, is a great place to grab some good greasy food, and the Little Pub does a great job with lunches--particularly when they do their once-a-semester lobster meal.

Special Options Students living in Rogers Estate or Woollcott House have the option of a limited meal plan and a private chef that prepares house breakfasts and dinners. Students living in the apartments at Griffin Road or off campus can choose smaller meal plans and cook meals in their private kitchens. Café Opus is also an on-campus facility, but is not run by Bon Appetit.
Did You Know?
  • During finals there is snack time in the library from 9-11 p.m. every night with cookies, donuts, and coffee. Each night of finals week also has something special like midnight breakfast or late night hot cocoa and candy in the pub.
  • You can put money on your All-Campus Card to use anywhere on campus, including Café Opus.
  • Every afternoon between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Commons offers snack time. Snacks include frost your own cookie, make your own trail mix, chips and dip, and do-it-yourself nachos
  • With the 21-meal plan, you can go into Commons or McEwen more than once per meal. So, for example, you can have breakfast at 9 a.m. and stop in for coffee an hour later without losing a meal. Alternatively, the Pub and the Diner do not allow re-entry privileges, so once you use a meal at either place, you'll have to wait until the next meal to eat at any of the dining halls.
