Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Upperclassmen have first pick of housing and are guaranteed to live in the nicest residence halls. The former fraternity houses have been renovated and are gorgeous. The rooms are large, the carpets are new, and the walls are still freshly painted. Most of the residents of the former fraternity houses enjoy large common spaces and full kitchens. Wally J and Rogers Estate have a similar feel. Carnegie is where a lot of the weekend action takes place, it is primarily made up of two-room quads with generous common areas in each room and a private bathroom. The suites in Milbank and Babbitt also have substantial common rooms, which can be decorated by the residents and used for everything from studying to partying.

Most first-year housing is cramped and somewhat dumpy—although this might change. Freshmen cannot live in a single, and their dorms are shared by students of all class years. South is the most coveted dorm, and freshmen living elsewhere complain about having less living space than that provided in South’s sprawling hardwood-floored quads and private baths. Dunham is notorious for its smell, and an architect with a passion for concrete constructed the dark-side dorms (Root, Major, Minor, McIntosh). Each dorm is a unique experience with an atmosphere like no other. Wherever you live your freshman year, you’re bound to find a group of friends that you’ll keep throughout your four years at Hamilton.

Housing: May the Force Be With You

Housing is very divided between the "light side" and "dark side" of campus (with a few extra stragglers down the hill). I personally am a dark sider, and have spent 3/4 of my years living on the dark side. Dark siders tend to be more granola, more hipsters, more arts/humanities focused, more green focused. Light siders are typically preppy, majority of the Greek life, and are science majors. Dark side dorms are more community-feeling, including co-ed by room and shared bathrooms, which I personally feel fosters conversations between more people. Light side dorms are more aesthetically beautiful (instead of cement) and are usually separated by sex per floor.

Your freshman year dorm is pretty much a crapshoot but based loosely on the housing form, take it seriously. If you write that you want a double, you'll get put on the dark side, and quad-lovers will get put on the light side. Light side dorms are more partiable for freshmen but will be much louder on the weekends. As you get older, the dorm options get nicer because your housing lottery number gets better. By senior year, all your options are great.

Roomy, Comfortable and (Mostly) Clean

The vast majority of rooms give more than enough space for students; South and Carnegie dormitories on the light side have massive common rooms and ample storage; the typical dark side double has beautiful, huge windows with great views of campus and walk-in closets. The only ways you can really go wrong are Bundy and Dunham - regardless of their general location, they both have the reputation o being seriously grimy.

Campus Housing

I love the housing on campus. There are 28 residence halls, which gives Hamilton students a great variety of living spaces. You can live with up to 5 roommates in suite-style housing, or with as few as zero roommates in one of the easily-acquired singles. I have been completely satisfied with my housing options, living in two of the older and wonderfully renovated residence halls.
