Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Hamilton College tries very hard to increase the diversity of our campus. The admissions office has been developing ties with inner-city students and extending their reach beyond the small New England towns. Athough Hamilton College does have the greatest amount of diversity among the NESCAC schools, most of the students are from upper-middle-class families and are white. Student organizations of many backgrounds have been working toward promoting diversity and acceptance. Most of the groups do host diverse activities, and attendance has been increasing. The Greek societies and diversity groups are beginning to work together, and responses have been overwhelmingly positive. Hopefully, in the coming years, Hamilton will become more and more diverse. The student body is very small, so even a minimal increase in numbers will make a big difference.

Even though the school does not necessarily represent a diverse community, Hamilton students are very accepting of racial differences. While racist and sexist problems do arise on campus, these incidents are very rare. Most students desire knowledge of different cultures and backgrounds and are particularly receptive to international students’ past experiences and heritage.

We're Pretty White...

Hamilton doesn't have a lot of ethnic diversity, and some view this as a problem. However, there is a lot of diversity of thought on campus, which I think is a lot more important than how we look.

Not Why You Go Here

Hamilton is pretty whitebread. The school has made a determined effort to reduce the homogeneity of the campus of late, but the great preponderance of kids are white, upper to middle class kids from the Northeast. There are plenty of minorities in all categories, to be sure, but it shouldn't be why anyone picks Hamilton.

Good but Room for Improvement

Hamilton has enough of diversity to be able to publish statistics that aren't embarrassing however it would be nice to see more. There is a good number of international students, a pretty wide range of economic students. Racial diversity is a bit limited. Apathy is more of a problem than diversity for politics and religion. There s also a small but strong LGBT community within the student body

Hamilton's strength is that what diversity it does have is met by high levels of acceptance

Facts

Gay Pride

The majority of the campus is very accepting of the gay community, even though it is a fairly silent presence. However, some individuals are quite active in promoting, understanding, and supporting all sexual preferences, and they are rarely ridiculed. Pride is one support group that is highly confidential, and members include students that have not come out to the general population. Meetings are private and take place in a secret location. The Rainbow Alliance is a more public group. They celebrate differences by hosting parties, and they are best known for the work done in preparation for National Coming Out Day. Things really changed after some homophobic behavior caused an uproar on campus after a student’s life was threatened for his sexual choices. The majority of Hamilton students, faculty, and staff have banded together in protest against the minority of students making our campus feel unsafe for people who don’t conform to what they believe is normal and acceptable behavior. A handful of threatened students have chosen to leave, and more have opted to stay, believing that the fight is worth their overall experience.

Political Activity

Most Hamilton students consider themselves liberals, both politically and socially. On-campus political activity can range from collecting care packages for troops abroad to attending peace rallies in New York City or DC. However, there is also a sizable portion of the student body that has earned Hamilton a reputation for apathy. Current events become old news quickly, and life on the Hill seems to continue without pause.

Economic Status

Students generally come from an upper-middle-class background. A fair amount of students come from private schools or the top public schools in the nation.

Most Common Religions

The majority religion at Hamilton is Christianity, although most students do not actively identify with any religion. As a nondenominational college, the Chapel holds a variety of services. There is a Protestant minister, a Catholic priest, and a Jewish rabbi that visit the campus each weekend. Students also take the Jitney downtown to attend any of the services offered in the area. Other spiritual groups use the Chapel for meditation or discussion as well.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Asian Cultural Society, Brothers, Black Student Union, International Students Association, La Vanguardia, Middle East Union, Native American Studies and Students Association, Tropical Sol, West Indian and African Association
