Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The drug scene on campus is mostly weed and alcohol, with a handful of students using harder drugs. For the most part, drug use is limited to a recreational use and comparable to the scene at any other college or university across the country. However, the school has been trying to deal with a growing drinking problem. A small, rural, and snowy area are all contributing factors to a drinking scene that has put careless freshmen in the ER. Additionally, the absence of Greek houses in the presence of Greek life makes some students believe that drinking has become more dangerous. An alcohol coalition was created to deal with the problem, but a lot of students working with the coalition are also Greeks, and viewed by some as the worst abusers of alcohol. The use of other drugs isn’t as open of an issue on campus. A sizable portion of the student body has used weed, uses it occasionally, or uses it everyday. The campus co-op was closed down after Campus Safety found students had disabled their fire detectors in order to smoke in their rooms. Smoking pot is definitely an integral part of the party scene at Hamilton, and can often be smelled coming from dorm rooms or wooded areas of campus.

Harder drug use is limited to a small portion of students. Adderall and Ritalin are popular study drugs, and students are willing to pay the price. During finals and midterms, prices sky rocket, but demand remains steady. Cocaine and mushrooms are also used, but done in private and only within certain social circles. Hardcore drug use isn’t very visible to the general campus body, nor is there much peer pressure to experiment. Students found using drugs are generally punished by the campus Judicial Board, and usually sentenced to relocating to a substance-free dorm or asked to enroll in a rehab program.

Not Sure

When I attended, I wasn't exposed to much drug use. I think alcohol use was pretty average for a college scene.

From my personal experience, alcohol is the main "drug". People drink. Tours get asked that question a lot, is the drinking scene really that big here? Yes, yes it is. If you don't drink or at least feel comfortable hanging out with people who do, you either need to find a group of friends who also all don't drink, or you will be very bored on the weekends. I know a handful of people who smoke weed fairly regularly, but I don't personally, nor do any of my close friends. There is a cocaine culture in one or two of the frats but I've never even been close to it in the slightest.
