Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Blood Fitness Center gives students and faculty members a beautiful space to burn off late-night diner breakfast and Opus chocolate chip cookies. The ground floor houses both a cardio and weight training room, fully equipped with treadmills, elliptical trainers, stair-masters, free weights, resistance machines, and a matted stretching area. At peak hours, the gym can get fairly crowded, but there is enough equipment that it's rare to wait for a machine. There is an additional set of machines specifically for varsity athletes located upstairs. In addition to the fitness center, the Alumni Gymnasium includes Bristol Swimming Pool, Sage Rink, Scott Field House, two weight-lifting rooms, an additional basketball court, brand new squash courts, tennis courts, and an indoor track.

Hamilton College is planning a new student center in the old Emerson Literary Society building (ELS), but for the time being, our student center is Beinecke Village. Beinecke Village is really pretty to look at, but seems to be the victim of an architectural experiment. It’s been called “one long corridor” by students, and it isn’t a major campus hangout. It does house the mail center, the Diner, the Barn, and the Annex. Late-night diner socializing is very popular, and a lot of student tables are set up around the mail center and diner area. Musical groups come to the Barn on Thursday nights as part of the Acoustic Coffee House series that brings smaller indie singers/bands to perform on campus. On weekends all-campus parties are thrown in one of four large social spaces: The Annex, The Hub, ELS Basement, and Bundy Dining Hall. Otherwise, the real student hangout on campus is Café Opus. The Café sells an assortment of baked goodies, lunch, and enough caffeine to keep students awake all night. In the lounge area around the café, a number of couches, loveseats, and huge armchairs make for quality studying or comfortable conversation. Classes are sometimes held there during the day, people meet their professors and friends for a tasty lunch, and students study or chat together all day.

Great

Nothing to say really other than that. The renovations the college has completed in recent years are impressive.

Student Center Is Used by Everyone, for Everything!

Our brand new Student Center is a great place to study or stock up on Hamilton gear, and it has amazing resources. In the upper levels, there are computer labs, our radio station, and a club room where clubs make posters to advertise campus events. In our sun porch, you often find students doing work, or watching football or The Jersey Shore, along with other events that are all catered by the campus activities board. In our basement, different organizations hire DJ's and decorate for great all-inclusive parties each weekend.

Excellent Condition and Easily Accessible

Everything from the Olympic-sized swimming pool to the observatory is top-of-the-line, in great condition, and is well-maintained. The college certainly does not spare any expense when it comes to facilities and equipment for its students. The really nice study rooms go fast and operate on a first come first served basis, but such is life. The gym has lots of great equipment and plenty of it, not to mention membership is included in the tuition. Many schools charge extra for things like that. My only gripe is that the dorms on the Dark Side of campus look rather ugly, but they are very spacious and nice inside.

Favorite Things To Do

The Campus Activities Board sponsors events such as comedians, acoustic coffeehouse series, and concerts. Usually, one of these events will take place once or twice a week. You could catch a dance performance or theater production in Minor Theater or Wellin Hall. If you're looking to burn off some extra energy, the fitness center is open 6 a.m.-11 p.m., and you could always take a dip in the Bristol Pool or join a pick-up game of basketball in the Field House. The Little Pub has team trivia every Tuesday, and they give out free drinks every afternoon if you show up with a professor.

Go to the Fireplace Lounge for pool, foosball, air hockey, and an Xbox for students. It is open 24 hours a day. The Little Pub often has karaoke or a campus band playing. The Events Barn usually has guest speakers or comedians to entertain students in the evenings.
