College Prowler Take
The people at Hamilton College make it the incredible experience it is. Although dating isn’t common among underclassmen, students tend to eventually find someone by their senior year. Just don’t expect to find a real relationship with the first person you hook up with. Most students play the field for their first couple of years. Predominantly a social student body, sometimes it is shocking to see the shy boy from history class out for a Thursday night party in Carnegie. The stereotypical Hamilton student is confident, well-dressed, and conventionally attractive. Unfortunately, this norm for Hamilton guys and girls is pervasive, and it can be frustrating rarely seeing other types of students who don’t fit the mold. Those who don't fit the typical Hamilton standard somehow seem to find each other. It's common to see tight-jeaned hipsters hand in hand, or J. Crew clad Greek society presidents out together on a Saturday night.

Walking around campus in the spring or early fall makes my day. Attractive girls wearing attractive clothing serves as a great re-energizer. Especially after a long winter, short skirts are a welcome distraction from looming deadlines and memories of the winter’s upstate New York wrath. |

Social Scene
Hamilton students follow a "work hard, play harder" motto. During the afternoon and early evening, students are found in the library or their rooms banging out papers or tearing through the assigned reading. By evening, students are out socializing. The bars downtown are hotspots during the week, and parties are popular on the weekends. The biggest challenge is monotony. With snow on the ground six months out of the year, students are looking for a change of pace. There are darksiders (living on the Kirkland side of campus) and lightsiders (living on the old ivy side of campus).
Hookups or Relationships?
Most freshmen and sophomores find freedom (or limitation) in serial hookups. During the first two years, it is rare to find couples that are officially dating. Most students start their freshman year with a boyfriend or girlfriend, but the vast majority of long-distance relationships are over by Christmas break. The no-strings hookup is easy to find if you're looking. However, many find a stable relationship by senior year.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
The first people students meet are other residents in their hall. First-years are all looking for new friends and experiences, and upperclassmen in predominantly freshman dorms are quite friendly. It's easy to strike up a conversation with the girl next door, particularly if you need quarters for laundry. Living next to people inspires an intimacy, and friends are guaranteed to know someone you'd like to meet. The gym, the library, and class all offer alternate venues for meeting people. Much to the chagrin of librarians, Burke Library is a social space, complete with hushed gossip and overactive text messaging. Commons is especially busy during peak lunch and dinner hours, although beware the catwalk down the aisles to find a table. Many classes, particularly those that are discussion-based, are excellent for meeting new people to party with over the weekend. Late-night socializing at the Pub or theme parties also offer the chance to meet new people. Although these opportunities are for one night, they are perfect for students looking for the freedom of a casual hookup. Hamilton students are very sociable despite the sub zero weather conditions. If you are hoping for warm smiles and a physical connection, wait until spring. Hamilton men rave about those first few days of spring when girls in short skirts seem to crawl out of the woodwork. Both early fall and spring encourage friendly socializing outdoors. On the quad, guys play frisbee while girls sunbathe or study on blankets. The general good mood of the campus that comes with good weather at Hamilton is one of the best ways to meet someone.
Dress Code
Hamilton is generally very pretty, at least on the North side of campus. Light-siders are often compared to J-crew or Abercrombie & Fitch models. During the warmer months, students don sear-sucker shorts and polo-shirts, but most of the year they wear a uniform of North Face jackets, Patagonia fleeces, and Ugg boots. After any part it’s normal to see multiple listings in The Daily Bull for lost black North Faces. Dark-siders tend to fare more on the hipster/hippie side, depending on whether you prefer skinny Urban Outfitters jeans, or baggy Levis with your plaid shirt. Nalgene water bottles, although not an actual clothing item, are also an integral part of the Hamilton wardrobe. The fact is, whether you come to campus with pearl necklaces or thick-rimmed ironic glasses, you’ll find a social group to match your style.
