Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Hamilton College might be one of the safest places in the world. Or, at least it feels that way. There is plenty of security for a small school in a very rural part of central New York. Blue emergency phones and alarms are clearly marked and decorate the campus grounds. Campus Safety’s staff is very visible in the dining halls and driving around campus. There is a switchboard operator available all night to take calls, and at least one safety officer is driving around the school checking on everything.

Although it irritates many students, the safety officers' job generally entails handing out parking tickets and breaking up parties that get too loud. While it is annoying, it says a lot about the relative safety on campus. There are so few real safety threats to students that safety officers have the time to make people turn down the volume on their stereos. Some might say that diverse groups on campus are at risk for some unwanted attention at times. Racial slurs are quite rare, but the campus does harbor a few students whose behavior is unfriendly toward the gay, lesbian, and transgender community, although only a handful are publicly out on campus.

Security

Hamilton is super secure; there is no violence among the students and during the weekends where trouble would start due to alcohol campus safety is always around. There is never any violence on campus.

Very Safe

Hamilton is in a pretty isolated environment, so there are rarely strangers on campus. People will leave their laptops and bags unattended in the library and KJ and come back without having to worry about things being stolen.

A Non-Issue

There is absolutely nothing to be afraid of on campus. There is very little theft; people often just leave their laptops and personal belongings out in the library. Students at Hamilton respect each other's property. I haven't locked my dorm for the 4 years I've been here, and people who live off campus downtown typically do the same.

In terms of physical safety, there is nothing dangerous to find even if you looked for it. We are in the little town of Clinton and surrounded by farms and forests. I'm comfortable going anywhere at any time because there is simply no danger anywhere near campus.

The only concern you should have about personal safety is Kirkland Police giving you a hard time if you're running around town late night.
