Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The biggest obstacle when you’re looking to go off campus for dinner is relying on blind faith. The most important thing is not to judge until after the meal. The reputations of most restaurants have been passed down from class to class, and nobody knows who tried it the first time, but in most cases, that original visitor was a brave soul. Restaurants such as Tex-Mex and the Mason Jar have unimpressive exteriors, but the food more than makes up for it.

The Utica area is home to a large number of various ethnic restaurants, enterprising students with access to a car or the bus can enjoy a large, delicious meal at a student-size price. Although newcomers to the area may feel as though dining options are limited at best, once they take some time to explore the surrounding area, many find themselves pleasantly surprised by the variety of local eateries. It is definitely worth talking to upperclassmen and checking the local paper; one of the advantages of living in here is that good food is cheap!

Only If You Have a Car...

To get anywhere off-campus, you need a ride, especially in the winter. Hamilton offers a van service into Clinton and some surrounding towns but it's unreliable. If the weather is nice, it's possible to walk down the hill to the two restaurants in town: Nola's, a fantastic but expensive Italian place (have your parents take you) or the Indian Restaurant. Some places nearby now accept the Hillcard, Hamilton's form of identification and payment, instead of cash or a credit card.

Many Great Options in Town

You can find just about any kind of restaurant in the town of New Hartford, which is a short 10-15 minute drive from campus. There's Mitsuba, a Japanese restaurant (with sake bombs!), and Minar, which has great Indian food. New Hartford has every chain restaurant you can think of from Panera to Red Lobster. A short walk down the campus hill puts you in the quaint town of Clinton which has a very nice cafe among other local businesses. In short, you will find any type of cuisine you crave with ease. Your campus keycard, also known as your HillCard can be used to eat at many of the restaurants in Clinton, both local and corporate. More and more restaurants are accepting the Hill Card as a form of payment each year, making eating out very convenient for Hamilton students.
