Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parking is a pain for the vast majority of students. If you are lucky, you can end up with a spot close to your dorm, but that is extremely rare. North and Root lots are a hike from anywhere. Break-ins and vandalism are fairly infrequent, but bound to happen at any school a few times per year. Lots are left unattended most of the time; security puts a lot of faith into the safety of the Clinton area. The college has taken student complaints to heart, though. Certain lots that are normally for faculty members are open to students on the weekends or after 5 p.m. A word of advice: make sure you move your car by 5 p.m. Sunday out of the Dunham lot, or it will be towed. Students often joke that Campus Safety has the towing company on speed dial and they start calling at 5:01. Campus Safety does not feel badly sending your car away if it is in a spot where it does not belong.

Freshmen cannot have cars. Some upperclassmen are denied parking stickers due to overcrowding already, so all freshmen are denied. The school will make an exception to this rule, but only for handicaps or extenuating circumstances. Don’t be too disappointed, though. It is not difficult to find an upperclassman willing to lend out his or her car in exchange for a tank of gas. As seniority increases, your parking lot will become infinitely closer to your dorm, which many upperclassmen view as a privilege inherent in class year.

Dunham Lot

Campus Security is located in Dunham Lot, and on several occasions I have received mixed signals about who is allowed to park there and when. But overall, as long as you get a pass for overnight visitors, parking is not a big issue.

Honestly, It's No Worse Than Anywhere Else

There are a lot of schools where freshmen aren't even allowed to bring cars, but Hamilton has an entire lot for freshmen. The vast majority of students live on campus and don't even drive to class. Cars are mostly used for going into town. You will only get a ticket for parking in the clearly-marked faculty lot, which is perfectly reasonable.

Bottom line: If you want to bring your car, there will always be space to park somewhere. Not every school can say that, especially large universities. As to how convenient that space is depends on your year and when you're parking, which is perfectly fair.

Bring Your Car

Since the college is isolated on a hill, bringing your car is a must. Freshman cannot bring cars, but there are always friends willing to give you a lift. Parking requires a permit and is limited to certain lots, but is not difficult to find. Don't forget the permit, though - you'll probably end up with a ticket.

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

There are only two kinds of permits: those for faculty and those for students. There are specific lots just for faculty members. If a student's car is found in a faculty lot, you will be fined or towed. The faculty lots are open to students during the weekends. Student lots can be a great distance from the dorms, especially in the case of underclassmen, but they are accessible. A lottery system, based on your housing lottery number, exists to determine which lot your car will be registered for.

Did You Know?

Best Places to Find a Parking Spot
The most coveted spots include Bundy Circle (for students living in Bundy), Ferguson (for students on the north side of campus), and Babbitt Lot (for students on the south side of campus). On the weekends, students prefer to park in Dunham Lot because it is closest to the dining hall and dorms.

Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here!
It’s very hard to find parking in Dunham Lot on weekend nights and Bundy Circle any time. Most parking lots are near capacity, but you can find a spot in the lot to which you are assigned.
