Transportation

Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town Borrow a car from a friend or take the Jitney. The bus is rarely used, and it's a pain to walk up the hill from Clinton.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport Get a ride from a friend, grab a taxi, or take the shuttles that Hamilton offers before breaks. A ride to the airport costs approximately $75 - $100 by taxi, so don't take one. Pay for gas and tolls if you're hitching a ride with another student. Most students are more than willing to take along a passenger if they have the extra room.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Your best bet when it comes to transportation is to bring a car. There is not much to visit in the area, but getting off campus is a welcome break from work and dorm life. Students especially like to escape Bon Appetit’s food for some of the local restaurant fare. The Jitney, in itself, is an experience. The music is chosen by the driver. If the driver happens not to share your taste in music, you’re stuck. Also, freshmen tend to get extremely excited about getting off campus so they will be jumping around and yelling throughout the ride. The Jitney will take you to the grocery store, downtown Clinton, the mall, and Wal-Mart. It is a convenient service for freshmen and other students without a car. The Jitney, however, can be unreliable. When the weather changes from bad to worse, service is cancelled, and students are left without a way to get off campus. The schedule also tends to change. You can rarely predict when or if the Jitney will come during the course of an hour. The Jitney is, however, a great way to get safely back to campus from a bar run.

The Utica Bus comes on campus and makes rounds to the mall and into downtown Utica. This is one of the best options for getting to the train station besides hitching a ride with a friend. The bus shares a station with the train, so the Utica Bus will take you right to Greyhound. The buses are also really great about staying on schedule and don’t cancel routes without warning.

No Complaints

The Jitney is the backbone of transportation on campus. It's a 12 or 14 person van, but 20 drunk people usually just pile in anyway, and it's a remarkably cordial process to find a seat. It will take you everywhere you need to go: the bars, the grocery store, and the liquor store.

90% of your friends will have cars however, so you only need to take the Jitney late night when everyone is drunk. Yes, it can get a little annoying sometimes waiting a few minutes for the Jitney, but no one's complaining.

For big off-campus parties, the fraternities and sororities sponsor large buses for these events. The school also provides great transportation for ski trips every wednesday, etc.

Jitney and...Jitney.

Hamilton has a Jitney service that a decent amount of students take advantage of, especially freshman because they aren't allowed to have cars on campus. The jitney randomly cancels, and I don't have much experience with it, but it's there. A lot of people have cars after the first year, and that's the main form of transportation. Remember: you're in central New York. There aren't many places to go that you'd need transportation.

Isolated on Top of a Hill

Hamilton is located on top of a fairly significant hill. It isn't fun to walk down into town, although people do. It is much nicer to have a car on campus, which you are allowed to do starting sophomore year. Bikes, again because of the hill, are useful on campus, but impractical for getting into town. There is a van service called the Jitney that takes students to the grocery store, the mall, the movie theater, etc, so not having a car is certainly doable.

The Utica train station is about 20 minutes away. The Syracuse airport is about an hour. It's not convenient, but it's certainly doable.

If you are here for the summer, you NEED to have a car, or know someone who does. Otherwise you cannot get to the grocery store, and there is no meal plan over the summer.

The campus itself is very small, and you can walk anywhere within fifteen minutes, so again, a bike can be nice but isn't necessary.

There is a travel scholarship for students who come from far away to offset some of the cost of traveling to and from school.
